I've been thinking (yes, I know that doesn't happen often ) and it would be handy if there was a bump-button!

When your thread doesn't get enough attention, you could bump it without posting in it, but it would show up in new posts (If such thing is possible)
The reason is, sometimes nobody notices the thread, or by freak accident it doesn't show up.

If your thread doesn't get "enough" attention, it obviously means it isn't interesting enough. A "bump" button is too much of an incentive for irritating people to flood the forum with old, uninteresting and redunant posts. That's my opinion.

Yes, "survival of the fittest" also goes for life in the JREF forum-habitat.

I have to agree with leonmarino on this, it would be abused and people would bump uninteresting threads that people not really care about and the good threads would vanish or be harder to find.
 
Plus, you could always just respond to your thread to bump it.

are you sure? maybe you should think this one through.
 
at first i thought it is good idea, but i'm not so sure... if nobody is interested in answering to the topic, then whoever posted it first should make it more interesting by posting new things and questions and expanding it... not just bumping and hoping for some answer..
 
I have been thinking exactly the same thing. One of the advantages of polls is that it does have this effect of "reviving" a thread when someone votes.

I think such a functionality should be used carefully though (only by Team Members ?) as we do not want some clowns to "bump" hundreds of threads just for fun...
 
I think such a feature would just be too tempting to abuse, for whomever has such an ability. It's already annoying enough when people vote in a poll, essentially reviving the thread, without providing any more discussion on the subject. I don't see that as an "advantage," but rather a nuisance.

Now think of such a situation with a bunch of threads mysteriously at the top of the pile, with no new material. The only reason they're there would be because someone thought they needed more discussion, but were too lazy to provide any input of their own? If you think a thread needs bumping, come up with something interesting to say to jumpstart the conversation again.

We already have a "bump" button, it's called "post reply."
 
Actully i think thats a really good idea it isn't always that your thread isn't intreasting enough sometimes it just gets lost in the fray

That's funny, because this is exactly one of the reasons that I have come to dislike polls here on Jref.

I would like to join in the chorus of others who have voiced opposition to the "bump" button. There are too many impatient people who would bump their threads every few minutes, for one thing!
 
I'm afraid I'm against this new idea.

I would rather dislike to see a thread on the top of the "new posts list" without any actual new post. Also, I'm afraid there will be some impatient or bored people to play with the button and we will have to worry about the spamming of new kind.

If you still insisted to have the button, you would need to be very careful and make some rules like:
1) The person's username who hit the button should show.
2) There should be some kinds of limitation such as you cannot use it unless it's passed more than 24 hours (or maybe one week?) since the last post and such as one should not hit the button more than once a day and so on.

I still don't see the necessity of the button though, because, as Glenn-san pointed out, you could always write something and post it to show the thread.
 
1 bump a day sounds nice. Besides, you doomthinkers out there should see it from the bright side ;-) There are solutions for anti-spamming (like Kyoko suggested for instance). Don't think the worst yet, if people would be as abusive on this board as you guys mentioned, why hasn't it happened before ? ;-)

The poll-reviving is kind of irritating I'm afraid Mac.
 
I think a bump button would be a bad idea. If someone wants to bump a thread, they can do so by posting in it. If they think their thread has got lost, they could just post something like "Hey, can anyone answer my question?" or anything pointless to bump it, and I've seen that done sometimes already.
 
Well reading the reast of the posts i have to say i didn't think about all the pro's and con's hmmm

You know what would be really handy being able to delete your own posts now that would be a good adition to the forum
 
That's where you are thinking 1-dimensional again. Forget I even asked about it.
