What is a typical breakfast in Japan?

Like in the US, it's cereal, eggs & bacon/sausage, coffee, etc.

I read that in Japan,a typical breakfast consists of steamed rice, miso soup, and then a side dish such as fish, omlette, natto, nori, etc.

Is that basically it?

Well, according to the breakfasts I've been treated to in Japan, a typical Japanese breakfast is indeed what you named. But I usually had melon pan and café au lait

When I ask my students what they've had for breakfast, they respond with "rice and miso soup" about 90% of the time. There are of course plenty of people who have toast or something else western-like.
