Hi! Not trying to start a war, but in your honest opinion, which airline is the best to fly with? Looks like we will be flying All Nippon Airways to Narita, and I'm not familier with them. I keep hearing that delta sucks internationally, but they look like the cheapest. What's your take?:?

How do you define "best"?

Cheapest?
Nicest flight attendants?
Highest quality gifts?
Tastiest food?
Most comfortable seats (coach, business class)?
Most convenient times?
Least lost luggage?

I would not have noticed.

The plane and crew could have been monkeys since I always slept as soon as the plane left the tarmac. I would go with the cheapest flight to have more money to spend while in Japan.

I guess it kinda depends where you are flying from as well. I heard that when you would fly to the states with united airlines they are terribly rude to you but if you would fly within the US or from the US it wouldn't be that bad.

I enjoy flying with KLM (I'm Dutch), although the flight attendants can have a certain attitude. Best were Cathy Pacific and Malasia airlines.

From what I've seen on youtube, I consider the best airline to be the one that doesn't trap you on the tarmac for twelve hours, and leaves on time. LOL But I know every airline has its off days. I'm flying out of Charlotte, NC, and I've never flown for more an three hours before. The minimum flight time looks like seventeen hours! Ok, add to my question: how do you fall asleep on the plane?! I rather like the idea of being knocked out til we land!

change your sleeping hours before you go, drink wine, don't download any movies 3 months before you fly... because those are the ones that they will show (been there done that).

Hopefully you can sit next to some interesting people whom you can have some nice conversation with...but that change is pretty big that you will sit next to an elderly Japanese couple that can sleep 6 hours straight.

American Airlines was cheapest last time I went but it added an additional stop. They also had the best food and in-seat entertainment.

YouTube is your prime news / information source? Hmmm.

As for falling asleep on a plane, try staying up late the night before. Or just take a pill. Lay off the caffeine, too.

To sleep on a plane, the requirement in addition to what Glenski posted is:
A half-empty plane so you get to use 3 seats to really lie down and sleep. This is highly likely considering the current state of tourist influx (down by more than 50%) into Japan.

Plane delays are usually caused by air traffic, weather, etc., and whether the flight you're boarding comes from another point of origin. So, you can't tell.

If you have to choose between the 2 Japanese airlines (JAL and ANA), I take ANA hands down.

Regarding good experience on international flights, I've liked Malaysian Airlines, Sabena, Singapore Airlines and ANA. Among American airlines, I liked Continental's flights to NY. American is no-fuss, professional. Worst was Northwest (which doesn't exist any more?).
My daughter flew Korean Air last month and loved the cabin attendants and the food.

Tourists aren't the only ones on planes bound for Japan. Every time I flew back here, the plane was crowded with Japanese who were traveling abroad. I don't think it is "likely" at all to expect a seat with 2 empty ones near you.

I've flown three airlines to Japan.

For best food and service: Singapore Air. Next to that is United Airlines. I usually take Korean Air for cheaper prices. Their service and food has greatly improved over the years.
