Science Astroscale shoots first close-up space debris image

On Friday, the Japanese space firm Astroscale Holdings Inc. revealed what it claims to be the first-ever publicly shared close-up image of space debris. It hailed this achievement as a step forward in comprehending the issues created by the accumulation of waste in Earth's orbit.

The debris in question is the second-stage segment of Japan's H2A rocket, launched in 2009. This piece of space junk was photographed by the company's demonstration satellite, ADRAS-J, which is shaped like a cuboid from a distance of several hundred meters. Travelling at high velocities, this section orbits the Earth at about 600 kilometres. It measures roughly 11 meters in length and 4 meters in diameter and weighs around 3 tons.

Astroscale is developing a business to remove others' redundant hardware from orbit. It won't do it on this occasion; the current mission is testing the sensors and software needed for safe proximity operations. But a determined effort to pull a lump of junk out of the sky should occur in the next couple of years, the firm says. The issue of orbital debris and the sustainable use of space is becoming a hot topic. Millions of items of techno-detritus have accumulated overhead since the start of the space age in 1957 - from flecks of paint to the abandoned upper stages of rockets like the one just pictured by Astroscale.
