Hi,
I have a quick question regarding re-entry permit. I'm planning to leave Japan at the end of this year to return home for vacation. However I'm wondering whether to apply for the re-entry permit now or wait until closer to the date. I don't want to wait too close because it may become "dangerous" (what if I miss some deadlines?). However if I apply now and the 1-year limit starts on the date I apply, that would suck (since I won't be travelling for another 4 months).
Anybody knows whether it's possible to apply for the re-entry permit but have it start on a specific date (far) in the future?
Thank you in advance for your help.

Multiple re-entry permit's valid date starts on the date of issue, and is usually valid for 3 years or until the date of your visa expiration, whichever comes first.
So you don't have to worry about it unless you are a permanent resident of Japan.

And the date of issue must be the date I receive my passport back?
Can I apply in August and have the issue date be in November?

No, if you apply on August 15th 2010, it will be valid from August 15th 2010 until the end of your visa (or until August 15th 2013 if you have permanent residence or another visa which lasts more than 3 years).

You do not "lose out" by applying before your trip, so get it whenever is convenient.
