Does that mean you aren't so materialistic?



I'm quite materialistic.(laugh) I'm really an ﾂ'Otaku', so I'm very happy to be surrounded by figures and anime.(laugh)

Of course, a hero with all the special effects. I often watched them when I was a child.


Which character left you with the strongest impression?



Well, it might be [Taiyou Sentai Sunbalkan]. I didn't see the real time broadcast, but I saw its replay. In such stories there are usually five characters or super solders, but there were only three which felt fresh, and I liked it.(laugh)


Did you play heros when you were a child?



Yes. Yes.


Then which role did you play?



Basically RED, but when my brother was there, I sometimes played BLUE. I liked BLUE because he stood out but was not in the center.

That is a very profound question.(laugh)ﾂ…..For me gentleness. I think it depends on how to understand, but I really like gentleness in lies.



I think it depends on what kind of lies. What do you think about being lied to by others?



I don't really remember being lied toﾂ….I believe anything.(laugh) Lies are true if we believe them. But basically I don't feel that when I talk with people directly, and I don't try to feel out what they are really thinking.



It means you are blessed with luck being able to meet good people until now.



Ah, that may be so. I lie quite often, but I try not to hurt people.(laugh)

It's a miracle. I was born, which is a miracle, and my parents met each other, which is a miracle, too. A long time ago when my parents were fighting, my mother said ﾂ"What would have happened if I married the man who I loved when I was a high school student.ﾂ".(laugh)


You and your mother have the kind of relationship where you can be so honest? (laugh)



Well, I was surprised too.(laugh) But if my mother chose a different man, I wouldn't be here. Now I'm far away from my parents, and before when I was in make-up, my mother called me.(laugh) I often tell her the news of our band, so our relationship seems good. We send summer gifts to each other too.(laugh)

Love for nothing. It's like a gentleness where we don't ask for any rewards. I think there is a point where a romance turns to love too. We call the connections between family members love.



Perhaps during a romance we may expect something in return, and at times our egos may get in the way.



Yes. Unintentionally we tend to think things like ﾂ"Why don't you help me more when I am trying to make things work?ﾂ" But a love seems more profound. I think it's a privilege of living things.



So what you love most is now what?



It's our band. When I make songs, I don't think about what I want to play, but I rather think our band's color or what the band wants to play first. It must be my love for An Cafe.

It's an outlet for feelings that we can't put into words. I think there is a limit to using words; I think that there are other ways to express our feelings when we can't find the right words.


Do you often shed tears?



I usually don't cry at all. But I often shed regrettable and sad tears.



Do you show it to others?



I never do that. But onceﾂ….I cried on stage of Hibiya Yagai Daiongakudou on April 30th, when bou left our band. I cried naturally, and couldn't stop it. Usually I mostly hide it. I also cried secretly in a car toward to Osaka where the tour final was. Well, you know, I am a guy so Iﾂ'm embarrassed to show my tears.

What future do you imagine concretely now?



Well, as I have just joined the band, my ideal is that we can do our live really well together as one.



Do you have a confidence in doing this?



It depends on how much effort I put into it.



yu-ki, can you see your ideal personal image for the future?



Ah, I hope I become a little smarter.(laugh) And I'm not good at talking. I'm really poor at explaining, and I can hardly tell people what I'm thinkingﾂ…ﾂ…I hope I can get over that.

Heroﾂ….. for me I think it means gentleness.


Ah, not strength?



Just being strong is not a hero, I think. To understand and to think about others' feelings is important in being a hero, I think.



I get what you mean. So can you name any heroes?



Putting it simply, super heroes like the Rangers. . They don't just fight the enemies but they fight because they want to help those who are suffering from the bad guys, And I think this stems from their gentleness.


So who is your hero now?



They are miku, kanon and teruki. All band members, but seniors to me, so I want to be like them. I want to catch up to them quickly.

They are the people who think about me and support me best.



Do you live with your parents?



My father lives here alone so I live with him, and my mother and younger sister live in Kagoshima. When I was in elementary school, I was living in Tokyo, but when I was in junior high school and high school, all my family except my father lived in Kagoshima, then I came to Tokyo to play music, and that was about 2 years ago.


You aren't living alone but living with your father, so that must be pretty comforting?



Yes, I think so. But our everyday routines are quite different so we don't see each other often.(laugh)

There are various loves, such as love for lovers, for friends, and the love you receive from parents. I think important to repay all the love I get back to people.


So how do you do that now?



Umﾂ….. Well to be honest not enough yet.(smile bitterly) I get so much love from various people. My high school teacher worked very hard for me to help me graduate from high school, because I couldn't get enough credits to graduate. Even now when I go back to Kagoshima, I contact him, and I really thank him!

Members often say me ﾂ"You're lying!ﾂ" when I talk.(laugh) but I hate to lie and be lied to. So I don't really like the word itself as sounds really badﾂ….but sometimes it's necessary I suppose.


Do you mean a lie where you are really thinking about others feelings?



Yes. Only when used in the right situations. But when I was a child, I wanted to tell a lie on April Fool's Day and I pretended my finger was caught in the train's door when I rode in a train with my mother. Unexpectedly it attracted a lot of attention, and finally it came out that I lied, then I was scolded by my mother.(laugh) Lies are not good at all.(smile bitterly)

It's just a feeling. We cry when we are sad or when we feel regretful. We sometimes cry when we are happy. Tears come out when we feel strongly about something too, I think.


yu-ki, do you show your tears easily?



Perhaps, I control and restrain my emotions when I'm with someone, but when I watch emotional movies in my home alone, I'm honest and cry loudly.(laugh)


Are you embarrassed to show your tears to others?



Yes. I'm embarrassed.


Have you ever cried in front of the band?



Not yet. But it may happenﾂ….but I'm shy, so I try not to show it.(laugh)

It's the future of An Cafe.


How far in the future from now do you imagine this to be?



Six months or a year, I think. Well, we just had a member change, so I think that it will be difficult in the beginning. Now we play our lives in quite big venues too, so we have to grow quickly. After about a year, I hope that the present five members will have grown together well.



Do you ever think about what you will be like in ten years?



I don't have the time to think about that now.(smile) My nature is to think about what is in front of me or in near future, not far from now.

It's [KAKUSEI HEROISM] for me. I had forgotten the word of ﾂ'hero' for a long time, and I heard the word when miku brought these lyrics.


Who is your hero drummer?



Well, it's not only one for me. I have a lot of favorite drummers, and I like skillful drummers. I established my present style to match An Cafe's songs.



Do you aim to be an all-round drummer?



Maybe so. But I wouldn't like to be a hero drummer. I think I would prefer to just concentrate on the beats, and not to insist on this or that in songs. My way is not really like that.

When I heard this song what first came to mind wasﾂ….it's me.(laugh) I remember more telling lies than being lied to. It's difficultﾂ…..yes.(smile)



But you are a man who doesn't like to lie?



Yes that's right. I don't think lying good. But sometimes what I say in earnest turns into a lie laterﾂ…. Well it's complicated.(laugh)


What about if you are lied to by someone?



Well, it's a matter of trust. When I'm lied to, I loose trust for the person. But humans are really difficult to understand.(smile)

My parents' faces come to mind. I think I still depend on my parents. Usually when we grow up and start working in society, we understand how precious our parents are, but I left my parents' home when I was at around 20 yeas old, so I feel the importance of my parents more. For about 3 years from about 20 I couldn't do anything well and those who I could depend on were always my parents. I didn't call them often, but whenever I called and told them everything, my parents were always there for me.



No strings attached love.



I really think so. They are always support me and encourage me. I think that my parents would never betray me whatever happened. I really respect them.

Human relationships. Parents, family, and An Cafe also have love, I think. When bou left An Cafe, we were able to get over the crisis whether we could continue the band, because we had love for An Cafe. The strong will of staff around us, which was ﾂ"We mustn't stop An Café now.ﾂ", was also a kind of love, I think. And fans believe and wait for us because they love us. I really feel their love when I see many people gathering in our lives everywhere.


Everyone's feelings group together and it turns into one big love.



Yes. I really feel so. I think Cafekko are the best fans, they really love us dearly. I'm always thankful to them.

I often recall the past and cry. This year I have been a real crybaby. Shibuya Koukaidou (which is now CC Lemon Hall), was really a place where I had been longing to play for a long time. I remembered the old days then when I used to dream about playing there. Honestly speaking, when I came to Tokyo alone, I never thought I would be able to stand on that stage.


It must a have been a big thing for you.



Yes. At that time things were really hard so I worked really hard to get where I am now. And of course recently when bou left the band that was pretty big too. But I think that if we continue working hard in about a year I will look back on it as a good memory.

AnCafe

[KAKUSEI HEROISM] was the first single that was recorded after your member change. Did you change a lot musically, physically, and mentally?


miku: 2 new members joined us, so we are quite influenced and the band also change a lot, I think.


teruki: But we 3, the continuing members, discussed when we chose new members that we would like to choose people who were still fresh, and had not yet formed their own style. So takuya seemed to like anything and could absorb anything especially at this point in his life. Listening to An Cafe's music up until now he understood how bou played I think. So I told him to also play using his own personal style too.


Before you said that not having a formed style was a merit, but did this cause you any worry?


miku: Ahﾂ….but he is just as I imagined him to be.


teruki: When we heard his sound, it seemed to fit us.


miku: Yes, I thought he really took on our style well.


So you 3 chose your new members well.


miku: I thought it was destiny. I was happy because just after short time, we were able to find two new members who really fit in with the band.


teruki: It wasn't me who found them, it was miku and kanon.(laugh)


miku: To be honest, teruki were against both of them at first.(laugh)


takuya: ﾂ…..Was he?(cry and smile)ﾂ…ﾂ…Thanks kanon.(laugh)


kanon: About takuya, I saw images from his live performance which wasn't shot very well I might addﾂ…..but I really felt his ability even in those images.(laugh)


teruki: No, no, that's not true.(laugh) I was a little worried as I said we needed a person who could play with us soon.


miku: I thought about that a little too. But I didn't want to be influenced by new members in a bad way either. I thought people who were too skillful for us or who had too strong an ego would be dangerous.(laugh) I was afraid that we may not be able to say ﾂ'NYAPPYﾂ?ｴ' anymore.(laugh)


On the contrary, takuya and yu-ki,did you have any pressure or anxieties in your first recording?


takuya: I made use of phrases by bou, but also arranged them in my own wayﾂ….It was difficult.(smile)


yu-ki: To be honest, I was nervous at first, and I became anxious more and more. I was worried if my tempo fit or not. But through the recording, I knew my bad points and habits. I learnt from that.


miku, kanon and teruki, were you stimulated or influenced in any way by welcoming two new members?


teruki: Personally speaking, we had just determined our new members, then went to recording and did our fan club live soon after that. We didn't have much time in preproduction so I wasn't able to think about my phrases very much. So I had difficulties in our lives.(smile)
When I listened to your work, I felt the drive in your rhythms.


teruki: Well, this type of song is one of my strong points.



kanon: I think so too. I finished the title song quite smoothly.


miku: With the lyrics, the keyword of ﾂ'hero' popped into my mind. When I was a child, my hero was Ultraman, but after growing up I thought that a hero is someone who influences people. And I thought that I could be a hero and that everyone else could be one too. Among Cafekko, there are many people who don't have much confidence, so I wanted to encourage those people. We were also weak mentally because one of our members left the band and our situation changed, so I encouraged myself to really live strongly from now on. Usually I finish writing lyrics just before the recording, but this time I had already finished the lyrics so I had enough time to practice singing. I could work on each part singing A melodies gently and singing B melodies strongly, so it really went smoothly, and I think that it turned out well!


Yes, I feel the strength throughout, and I can feel your various expressions in each part well.


miku: Really? That's good.(laugh)


teruki: I got strength from these lyrics. I thought that unless we did something, Cafekko would loose their way, so we really had to word hard to come up with something good.


yu-ki: I thought these lyrics matched takuya and me. I thought we had to be heroes from now on.


On the other hand, ﾂ"respect mummyﾂ….I hope to help people by using my good pointsﾂ…..ﾂ", which is an interesting song having a complicated development and a hardcore mood, contrary to the main stream of the title song.


teruki:kanon, it had been a while since you last let us run a muck!(laugh)


kanon: It's totally messed up.(laugh) Riffs are so much harder and longer than before and miku shouted in the song which he had never done before.


Yes, I was surprised at miku's shout.(laugh)


miku: I was surprised too! Like, I could make such a voice.(laugh) I tried for the first time and worried about whether I could do it, but I made did it. Now I'm doing it in our lives. I think it's cool like this.
The rhythms are also groovy.


teruki: Actually we don't do that tempo so much in An Cafe.


kanon: I was able to try some new stuff out. I played many phrases for the first time. In main melodies, I played not only smoothly but used rests.


teruki: In the interlude we had a break and then started with a different tempo. We can try various things in kanon's songs, because they have no set rules.


kanon: No, no there is just some room for movement.(laugh)


teruki: Don't say that, I was trying to say good things about you.(laugh)


kanon: But I would rather be modest.(laugh)


takuya and yu-ki, how did you feel trying such songs?


yu-ki: I thought I could make this kind of song interesting. An Cafe has a strong character, and I think other bands can't do this easily.


takuya: I wanted to give momentum to this song. Not only just to give momentum by riffs, but also I wanted to put in playful elements


You have a wide capacity in what you can do, but your guitar solo seems really like you, takuya, it really focuses on technique.


takuya: I was asked to play a hot guitar solo there, so I played hot.(smile shyly) It was good to be able to express my taste or style, I think.


In both songs, I could feel the new possibilities in ﾂ'An Cafe'. I think these songs are really good way to restart things.


miku: I want you to listen to these songs soon. They are really exciting.


teruki: This is our first release this year. Sorry to have kept you waiting for such a long time!


At around the time when this issue will be published, you will be in the middle of your tour ﾂ"NYAPPY GO AROUND 3ﾂ", and the final live will be in NHK Hall. Any thoughts about it?


miku: Well, I think NHK Hall is a quite big venue. I thank fans for putting us on that stage, and we will have to work hard not to let them down.


teruki: Whether we succeed or not in NHK Hall depends on how we play in each live. If we can do good lives until then, I believe many people will come to see us in NHK Hall.


yu-ki: It's my fist experience in doing a national tour, so I'm nervousﾂ…..I want to do our lives full of confidence!

takuya: I'm really happy to stand on the stage of NHK Hall, but no matter how big or small the venues are, I think it will always be a challenge for me.(smile) Anyway, I'll do my best one by one!


kanon: I can't help feeling excited. Many people can see our band with new members. I really think that we can live up to their expectations.


Yes, I'm looking forward to your activities in the future too.

The An Cafe fan club ﾂ'BondS' presented the live tour of Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka, which was ﾂ'the 3rd Cafekko meeting'. This was a fan club event and many fans came to see the new band members; takuya and yu-ki for the first time, so the venue was filled with excitement and expectation.



The opening song was catchy [NYAPPY in the world]. miku stirred saying ﾂ"Shibuya~! NYAPPY~ﾂ?ｴﾂ" in high spirit, and the audience answered cheerful calls of ﾂ"Oi! Oi!ﾂ". kanon and takuya moved around on stage right and left, teruki had a big smile on his face, and yu-ki moved around full of energy. To be honest, I was surprised at their group dynamics as they had only just joined the band. In the following song [Snow Scene], all of the audience waved their hands to the music really getting into the live.



ﾂ"Thank you very much for so many of you coming to see us! Let's rock this place! I'll introduce you our members, so give them a big cheer!ﾂ" miku said in MC and introduced members in a song of [Takaido], then they fired off an eccentric [Ippatsu Gyakuten Ren-ai Game] and an avant-garde [Tekesuta Kousen] one after another. miku shouted with a rugged death voice, and made the audience go wild.



Then again in MC, miku told everyone about his dog which he had recently got and about an unknown aspect of a new member, takuya. ﾂ"I went to Karaoke with takuya and yu-ki, and takuya sang An Cafe there. He usually sings in a low voice, but he sang in his high voiceﾂ?ｴﾂ". In the next fan club live, you might hear takuya's beautiful voice instead of kanon's!?



The gentle mood suddenly turned into a more adult mood with the song [ESCAPISM], then miku introduced the next song as ﾂ"This is the song in which I sing about my present feelings.ﾂ", and a sentimental song [ORANGE DREAM] followed. Tender melodies, gentle sounds of keyboard and arpeggio guitar rhythms filled the air with enthusiastic vocals, which made us feel comfortable putting everyone into a tranquil state like it purified everything and made us forget the previous excitement for a while.



Here miku left the stage, and the instrumental songﾂ【et ceteraﾂ】which is an aggressive playful song with shuffle rhythms, started. takuya who likes technical guitar played with his right hand, yu-ki who has an eccentric sense played a keyboard solo, and we could see that both new members had quite original characters. And then finally they started talking on stage about how the rainy season had began in Kantou region and asked to each other what they would do if they saw a girl without an umbrella in the rain. I won't say what each member said here, but they were like kanon, a little bit awkward, takuya's Kansai accent was cute, yu-ki drew a laughter using his afro hair, and I didn't know why but teruki started imitating [DEATH NOTE]. Each member's answer reflected their own characters, and excited the audience. miku appeared on stage again, and did his well-known ﾂ'pants illusion' performance. This is where he pulls white briefs over his head and somehow pulls them down to his feet.....it was such a simple performanceﾂ….oh, noﾂ….it was a highly technical show, I hope he does it for everyone again sometime.(laugh)



This fan club event had such a loose pleasant mood, where teruki was able to talk about the true natures of takuya and yu-ki a little bit in his MC. I could see these 5 members knew each other but banded together even more through this fan club tour.



The last spurt of this live was a psychedelic number [Duck no magical adventure] which made the audience head bang wildly. [Pusshin Pudding] then overwhelmed the audience with its heavy riffs and effective vocals, and a digital dance number [Maple Gunman] in which miku lifted his microphone stand up higher and higher stirred and lifted to the audience. Finally [smile ichibaniiﾂ??(Onna)] made members and the audience smile bringing the live to a close.



In encore, they played their new single [KAKUSEI HEROISM] for the first time. The song had a strong message and solid beats, and the audience reacted in full swing which almost as though it was not a new song. At the very end, An Cafe and Cafekko re-cemented their bond in the well known [Bonds~Kizuna~], then the live ended.



From this live I could really see a new part of An Cafe. I think that many fans including myself are wondering how they will grow as band from now on, which a question that I am sure will be answered the tour ﾂ"NYAPPY GO AROUND 3ﾂ"
