ANA to set up accident museum

TOKYO ﾂ― All Nippon Airways Co has decided to set up a commemorating space for air disaster victims within its new facility to display debris and other materials from its past accidents, company officials said Sunday.

The commemorating space will display the names of more than 350 passengers and crew members who died in ANA airplane accidents, including one in Shizukuishi, Iwate Prefecture, in 1971, in which an ANA plane collided with a Self-Defense Forces plane, killing 162 people. ANA plans to open the facility in Tokyo's Ota Ward by the end of March next year.

I'm not quite sure to think of this. Yes, it's nice to show some respect for those who die in plane crashes, but debree displays?

Well, they do refer to it as a 'commemorating space', which sounds reasonable (although 'memorial' might have been a better term). I think 'museum' was an unfortunate (although presumably intentional!) word to use! A memorial is I think not objectionable, just a place to remember accident victims. But displaying the debris does strike me as a tad morbid.

Indeed weird to put up a place for everyone to be reminded of tragedy.

Twice-screwed "news" that Kyodo originally reported as,

全日空は５日までに、１６２人が犠牲となった１９７１年の「雫石事故」など全日空の過去の事故での残骸や資料を保存・展示する新たな施設に、犠牲者の冥福を祈る追悼スペースを併設する概要を固めた。

施設 is the keyword which is institution/facility, not "museum." Kyodo intentionally or unintentionlly mistranslated the article title to "ANA to Set up Space to Commemorate Dead in New Accident Museum" on Mar. 5th 2006.
And a know-nothing-about-Japan website relayed it changing the title to "ANA to Set up Accident Museum," deleting such "unimportant" paragraphs as

ANA plans to open the facility in Tokyo's Ota Ward by the end of March next year, which will be open to the public for educational purposes.

The planned establishment of the mourning space is based on a proposal by Keiko Shingo, an ANA employee at Haneda airport in Tokyo, who said, "I expect my colleagues to feel the importance of lives at this space, even though they do not visit accident sites, such as Shizukuishi."

Then the ones at another site having "discussions" based on "information" they are fed.

Debris display is to show that the airliner has no intention to conceal any evidence of their mistakes, as well as lessons that should not be tossed in the garbage bin.

Exhibits in the 622 square meter display space include photographs, charts and other items from a JAL 747-accident in August 1985. These items include the flight data recorder, cockpit voice recorder and seats from the aircraft, which was flying from Tokyo to Osaka when the accident happened. A major exhibit is the rear pressure bulkhead from the aircraft (registration JA8119). This fractured in flight, severing hydraulic lines and blowing off most of the aircraft's tailfin, thus rendering the aircraft uncontrollable.

The post by 名無し does a very good job of explaining how poor translating and editing can lead to misunderstanding. I would just like to add that it is important to realize that the facilities aren't intended to be some sort of ghoulish tourist attractions.
