A question for the native speaker

Hi,

I have a few sentences that are mostly identical except for the joshi. Depending on the joshi, the sentences might emphasize different things. What I want to ask is how frequently one would use one way as compared to the other way.

私は(多くの)日本人中国人日本人のことを嫌がっていると思っていると聞いたことがある。

私は(多くの)日本人中国人日本人のことを嫌がっていると思っていると聞いたことがある。

私は(多くの)日本人中国人日本人のことを嫌がっていると思っていると聞いたことがある。

For the most part I do think that I know the emphatic role of the particle 'wa' in most cases. I was hoping to ask native or fluent speakers about which would be the most natural way (if any) of saying something like this colloquially, in using such relative clauses and with NO specific emphasis intentioned.

Thanks,

Limiting yourself to this formation, this should work better for you:

私は多くの日本人が中国人は日本人を嫌がっていると思っていると聞いたことがある。

Remember that in stacked/layered sentences, Japanese tends to follow a は/が/は/が pattern.

However, if you want a more natural way to say this:

多くの日本人は中国人が日本人を嫌がっていると思っていると私は聞いたことがある。

This would lack emphasis in any particular point, but with the nouns placed closer to their respective verbs, becomes more easily understood (since this is such a convoluted sentence).

Generally, you want to avoid repeating the same joshi. So among the above three sentences, the second one 「...は...が...」 sounds slightly better than the others. But as Mukade suggests, there's still a room to improve. Since the sentence is a bit long I'd like to insert punctuation.

多くの日本人は、中国人が日本人を嫌がっていると思っていると私は聞いたことがある。

中国人に嫌われていると思っている日本人が多いと、私は聞いたことがある。
What do you think of that? And what if you took off the kiita koto ga aru part, and went with らしい?

中国人に嫌われていると思っている日本人が多いらしい。
どう、それ?I think it simplifies it a bit..

I think it was a really good try!

これは私の最近の悩みになっていることを思い出させます。それは「文法上で正しくても必ずしも実際に正しいわけではない」ってことです。しかし、私は文法がいつも正しいわけじゃないしね。

最近はちょっと腹立たしいです。

I personally like Gaijinian's second one. It's succinct and articulate. I don't see much difference between 嫌われる and 嫌がられる in this case. Actually I feel 嫌がる is more suitable for things rather than people. e.g. 「納豆を食べるのを嫌がっている」

そうですね。あらゆるチャンスを利用して勉強するしかないですね。
私も細かい文法の間違いのことが心配でときどきよく寝られないよ。
みなさん、思っている事を言葉にして書いたりするのも大切なことなので、出来るだけ日本語を
使ってみた方が良いですね。日本語を勉強するのに一番役に立つ方法の一つは書き込む事です。

誰も好ましくない印象を与えたくないし、ここの和文の数が足らなくて本当に残念だと思いますよ。

Elizabeth

Hi minasan, thank you very much for all of your great insights. I previously have not heard about the は/が/は/が that exists in stacked patterns. I wondered about what particles would be used in such situation, but I guess I got my answer!

Arigato gozaimashita
