10 million foreign visitors in 2013, 13m in 2014, 19,7m in 2015, and finally topping the 20m mark: 24m in 2016! The Japanese government now aims at a staggering 40m foreign visitors in 2020.

Japan doubles overseas tourist target for 2020 (Japan Times, 30 Mar 2016)

Probably won't act on it, but I've given some thought to buying a unit close to the station here that I could airBNB.

Maybe then sell it into the olympic strength.

And most of those 24 million visitors on a Japan Rail Pass try to get through a single maned gate at Kyoto station (one way space for two way traffic), while people hold up everyone else asking questions about their tickets.
Unfortunately the infrastructure doesn't help and despite the growth, that one spot in the country is the one I hate the most, and there is space to make another manned gate.

No wonder there was a bit on television a few weeks ago about tourism in Kyoto reaching such levels that tourists are getting to be a problem.

It's not just in Kyoto, but we all have things that frustrate or annoy. One of mine is tourists who stop to work out where they are supposed to be going in a busy spot (like a train station) blocking the way and oblivious to the thousand people trying to get on with their everyday lives. Strangely, the bus loads of people shepherded from point to point are not as much of an issue because they have guides with metaphorical whips and they only go the bus accessible spots.
