This actually came up in another thread elsewhere but I was wondering if anyone is familiar with or has used ギャル文字（ギャルもじ）? Read up on it on Wikipedia but I still don't really understand some of the shorthand...figures as I have a hard enough time trying to understand 顔文字 (かおもじ) or for that matter leet and texting shorthand in English (^_-)-☆.

I guess you have to be a teen or use your 携帯/ケータイ a lot to really know the shorthand, but it does make things rough when reading some Japanese BBS or emails.

gyaru moji makes me want to kick puppies. In the face.

The only merits are that it goes to show that kids all over the world are trying to come up with new ways to communicate how cryptic pre-pubescence is. Don't feel bad for not understanding it.

Thanks for the feedback Nice_Gaijin. Nice to know that I'm not the only one irritated/confused by it. It's tough enough to grasp the language without all these variants in the language like ﾋ彗ﾂ青ｻﾅ津ｪ (waseigo), regional dialects like ﾅ?ﾃ鳴青ｼ窶｢ﾃ (Kansai Ben) or Japanese teen slang. Than again I guess Japanese learning English encounter confusion as well with New York vs California vs Southern accents, American vs British spellings & pronounciations and all the slang terms.

I guess you have to be of a certain demographic to appreciate it. Personally I don't mind people using it as long as they are able to use standard Japanese when appropriate.

I mean, kids will be kids. I sure was a kid when I was one!
