広げる／がる　ｖｓ　広める／まる

What's clear to me is that 広げる deals with tangible stuff like newspapers and manure and 広める with intangibles like ideas and panic. But when it comes to 広がる／まる it seems 広まる may be used with tangible things and vice versa judging from examples i've seen. Is this true or have i been getting bad examples?

They are transitive/intransitive verb pairs.

I think your perception regarding the difference is correct.

A dictionary does reveal contrary examples, though (4):

ひろ・げる［広げる・拡げる］（他下一）
①たたんであるものをのばしひらく。
「ふろしきを━」
②ひらく。あける。
「本を━」
③はばや面積を大きくする。
「差を━」
④規模を大きくする。
「事業を━」
可能広げられる。

Compare with

ひろ・める［広める］（他下一）
①広くおこなわれるようにする。広く知られるようにする。
「技術を━・名を━」
②範囲を大きくする。
「知識を━」

As Mike said, it's transitive vs intransitive verbs. It's more or less the same in English except usually the underlying verb/spelling doesn't change in English hence the confusion. There are a lot of examples here: What's the difference between hajimeru and hajimaru?

If i didn't know what's the difference between transitive and intransitive verbs i would have entitled it 広げる／広めるｖｓ広がる／広まる
Thanks for clearing the difference between 広げる and 広める for me Mike.
What about 広がる／まる? There are tons of examples like those below. As you can see both are intransitive verbs dealing with intangible nouns.

妙な噂が広がっている
彼が来るというニュースはたちまち広まった

Which doesn't really serve to clarify all that much.....

Just sticking to 広がる seems to be way to go. Occasionally tossing in 広まる with "news" and "rumors". No big deal.

広がる／拡がる(ヒロガル)とは - コトバンク

Unlike 広がる, which means "to spread/extend naturally/automatically", 広まる has a nuance of "to spread/become popular as a result of someone/people's intentional action 'to spread'".
広げる and 広める have different meanings as well. For instance, 知識を広げる can be used only for "to broaden one's knowledge", mostly "one's own knowledge". Only 知識を広める can be used for "to spread knowledge among people".

首相の辞任のうわさが広がっている。
A rumor of the resignation of the prime minister spreads out (spontaneously).

新聞の記事から首相の辞任のうわさが広まっている。
A rumor of the resignation of the prime minister spreads out by a newspaper article.

先生は読書を通して生徒の知識を広げていった。
The teacher broadened his students' knowledge through letting them read books.

彼は正しい感染予防の知識を広めていった。
He spread correct knowledge about infection prevention (among people).
