The brewery was founded in 1890 by Uehara Takeshi (上原武七). He wanted a trademark that was easy to understand and sounded celebratory, so he named it 'Tsurukame' (crane and tortoise).

Shōfukujin Junmai Ginjō, Echigo Tsurukame's sake for New Year and other festive events, is clear and silky, with a medium body. It has a fruity aroma with citrus accents and a spicy and intense flavour with a medium degree of complexity and nuance; smooth and gentle mouthfeel, faint notes of fungi and narazuke pickles and a hint of pepper; medium dryness with a spicy and refreshing finish. It can be enjoyed both cold and heated. And being a "celebratory sake", it comes with gold flakes.
