Legend of Galactic Heroes (Heldensagen von Kosmosinessef)

I've recently started watching an amazing Japanese anime series, Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu, Aka Heldensagen von Kosmosinesef, aka Legend of Galactic Heroes. Its an older television show, airing from about 1988. I've only seen a few episodes (there are over 90 of them) and I must say that I am impressed and eagerly wanting to watch more. its an amazing story with excellent characters and great development. ITs got a deep deep back story and the world is so very developed. Its a science fiction between two very different states which have been been at war for several hundred years.One is patterned after an Imperial Germany, and the other is sort of stagnating democratic state. Their war has reached a stalemate, until the appearance of two young leaders. Wang Weili and Reinhard von Musel.

This isn't the same as most anime, there are no music, large robots ect. War and death are treated seriously. It reminds me alot of Tolstoy's War and Peace. This isn't suprising since the series was adapted from a Series of novels (rather than Manga which is typical of most series )

Im wondering, has anybody watched this series? Only 10 episdoses in, Im already giving it a classic anime series, maybe in my top 3.

Oh BTW, Im predicting that not one person will reply with a positive answer, even if I get a reply. I don't believe this series has ever been officially released in north america, and the last fansub was done in the early 1990s, and never completed because the insane amount of dialgoue. So much intrigue goes on its really interesting.

There is two movies, "My Conquest is the Sea of Stars" who acts like a prelude to the 110-episode(Ginga eiyû densetsu: Waga yuku wa hoshi no taikai (1988) - IMDb) and "Overture to a New War" (Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Overture to a New War (1993) - IMDb), of which I have no information of.

I always heard good things about this series, but I have always had trouble finding it, since it never aired on TV, at least where I have been. I'll try to get some episodes.

I'll reply in the positive... I've seen the first four episodes of this show, and did enjoy it very much. I've also seen the first movie, which was quite amazing as well. But you do have to be interested in military strategy and such to really get into this series... but I love the epic space battles set to major classical music (Ravel's "Bolero" was a particularly interesting choice).

I wish there was more available out there, and it does have a pocket of fans where I am... but since it's quite different from the usual anime translated in the USA, I doubt we'll see it (not to mention the daunting length of the TV series). The closest thing out there released is probably "Crest of the Stars" and the rest of that series, but since you have many cute Abh girls in that series it gives it an advantage in appealing to the American audience, I suppose.

But never say never... but here's an interesting question ot Galactic Heroes fans: have any of you watched "Irresponsible Captain Tylor" at all? My friend (who has seen all of Galactic Heroes) reports that this series is an amazing parody of Galactic Heroes!

I already watched the first movie as well. I wished I watched it before the series because it sets up the first battle and Alastair.

The best way to get it is through Bittorent, however the subs are 1990, and only go up to episode 40 or so. I don't have a problem with Bittorrent here because the series does not have north american rights. I heard there is a chinese bootleg version with decent subs floating around out there, however I don't know how I would get my hands on it. I am on the cusp of understanding what they are saying in Japanese, but subs just help with those difficult sentences that use rarer words. There was some talk to bring it over, however the company that wanted to do so was asking over a thousand dollars for the whole set, which of course is ridiculous, so it never got a response.

The first four episodes are battle related however as the series progresses its not completely battle driven. Its like war and peace, relationships, emotions, power in war.

I'm now up to episode 20

MOTHER OF GOD THIS MIGHT BE THE MOST INTELLIGENT ANIME SERIES EVER.Evangeleon looks like it was written by a 5th grader compared to this series. Not one series I have ever watched has had such an effect on me. Obvious filler episodes are not so obvious as they play a part of the overall series yet focus on important aspects of human relationships. I am not deeply considering this series to be my number one favorite series of all time. The Battles and tactics are classic ones, like the scortched earth policy that the Russians inflicted on Napoleon and the Germans during their invasions. EXCELLENT STUFF.

i started grinning as soon as i saw the topic title. yeah, it's pretty good -- got some from kodocha anime before they went down (got some touch dvds too!)
one thing of note is unlike most anime, the majority of characters have foreign names -- no makoto kobayashi or nothing like that
seems like the main protagonists names are of german and chinese origin
it's good, but it's good in the same way that votoms, mellowlink, old gundam are (what i feel like i'm watching anyway -- discounting the robots of course)
doesn't soyokaze still have some up?

I wish I could have seen all of "The Irresponsible Captain Tyler," but International Channel quit airing it. I really enjoyed it, but I had no idea that it was a parody of anything. I just thought that it was funny. Now I wish that I could see both "Legend of Galactic Heroes" and "The Irresponsible Captain Tyler." Man, not having money really sucks!
