Sorry didnt know where else to post this:

Just curious if the Kodama spirit is a real myth or is it just made up in the movies? I have found very little information on it.

It is spirit of a tree handed down in "kodama" Japan.
Spirit dwells in an old huge tree and protects a forest.
It was said that the phenomenon that an echo of a mountain returned to was a voice of "kodama" in old days.
