Just when we thought things couldn't get worse here

A Kyodo News poll released on Friday indicated that former economic security minister Takaichi Sanae is currently viewed as the strongest candidate to take over leadership of Japan's ruling LDP ahead of next month's leadership election. The two-day telephone survey, conducted from Thursday, showed Takaichi leading with support from 28.0% of respondents, followed closely by Agriculture Minister Koizumi Shinjiro with 22.5%. Both are emerging as the principal rivals in the contest scheduled for 4 October, which will determine the successor to PM Ishiba, who announced his resignation on Sunday.
Among those polled, 76.4% expressed doubt that Ishiba's departure would help restore public confidence in the party. His cabinet's approval rating increased to 34.5%, a gain of 1.8% from the previous week. In comparison, the disapproval rate dipped slightly to 51.4%. Among other potential candidates, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi Yoshimasa received 11.4% support, former foreign minister Motegi Toshimitsu 6.1%, and former economic security minister Kobayashi 3.6%.

The likely LDP strategy for Takaichi is to compete with Sanseito for those conservative and ultranationalist votes out there. Expect more xenophobia and political extremism in the run-up to the next general election.
