On Wednesday, the Imperial Household Agency started offering virtual reality tours on its official website. These tours provide 360-degree panoramic views of sites connected to the Imperial Family, including the Kyoto Imperial Palace.
VR Tour of Kyoto Imperial Palace
The initiative is intended to give the public a closer and more immersive appreciation of the culture and history surrounding the Imperial Household. The VR tours cover four prominent locations: the Kyoto Imperial Palace, Katsura Imperial Villa in Nishikyo Ward, Kyoto Sento Imperial Palace in Kamigyo Ward, and Shugakuin Imperial Villa in Sakyo Ward.
During the Kyoto Imperial Palace tour, users can explore key structures such as the Shishinden Hall and Seiryoden, once used as the emperor's daily quarters, while viewing intricately painted screens and architectural details. The experience also includes rare access to typically restricted areas like the Otsunegoten, originally constructed as the emperor's residential quarters.
The VR tours are available in Japanese and English. In February, the Imperial Household Agency will also offer a VR tour of the Imperial Palace in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo.
