Ekōin Temple, built to commemorate the Great Fire of Meireki victims, became a popular venue for Kanjin Sumo, a traditional Japanese sumo wrestling event held to raise funds for temples and shrines. The temple's reed-screened sumo hall hosted these events twice a year, spring and fall, until 1909. Kanjin Sumo was a significant cultural event in Edo, with a regular schedule of four tournaments annually in three cities.
