Whiteman fever?

I was watching this Japanese's show and one of the characters asked if another character had "Whiteman fever'. I assume it means "fear of white people" or "hate of white people".
Has anyone else heard this term?
Is this a common view in Japan? I always thought Japanese liked "Westerners".

Anyway, I am just curious because I have never heard that term before thats all.

doinkies doesn't know which show this is, but perhaps the character made the "white man fever" comment because the other character is obsessed with Westerners and wants to be one (kind of like how sometimes people who are obsessed with Japan are called Japanophiles)? doinkies hasn't heard the term before though...
 
Was "Whiteman fever" in Japanese, or subtitle (or translation) in English?
If it was literal translation from Japanese, it means something quite contrary what you've guessed, just as doinkie commented.

窶扨 (netsu/fever in Japanese) could mean enthusiasm on something. If one has [something/someone]-fever, that means the person is crazy about [something/someone]. I've never heard of 窶昶?卍人窶扨 (hakujin-netsu/whiteman fever) before but there are tons of newly coined words especially when it comes to TV shows...

I'm not 100% sure about the above interpretation though, without the context.

As to your question, I don't think hatred towards westerners is so common, but it depends on people and what kind of 'westerners' the object is. It is too broad to tell what is the generaly tendency.
 
I've heard the term "yellow fever" used to refer to someone who's obsessed with Asian things. This could be the reverse of that. Were the people speaking male or female? Was this in subtitles or were they speaking English?
 
Some like western people, some don't. Some Dutch people like Germans some don't like Germans...

But I have never heard about Whiteman fever yet, which TV show was it?

Sounds like a katakana word. I'd say doinkies and undrentide are on the money.
 
The word was in subtitles, not English.

and the show is called 'Black Lagoon'. I think it was episode #6.


I'll have to go back and check. At the time in the show, the main characters were fighting some Neo-Nazis and the one main character was 'enjoying' killing them and the other asked if she had 'whiteman fever'. So I assumed it was a negative term. But from what you are all telling me it is the opposite of that. I must have read it wrong or something on the subtitles.

I looked up Black Lagoon on the net - as you called it a show, I thought it is one of the Japanese so-called "variety show", but it actually is anime.

According to the Japanese Wikipedia on this anime, there's a Neo-Nazi group 窶昶?卍人ﾅｽﾃ絶?ｰﾃｯﾅｽﾃ･窶ｹ`窶冂ﾅ停?ｹ窶怡 (which can be translated something like Caucasian Socialists United Party), so maybe the word Whiteman Fever here has negative connotation.

Sorry for saying this, but it is fiction, anime - so you should not connect it to the Japanese or Japan in reality!

lol, I know it is just fiction and I don't connect it to Japan.
I just heard that term and didn't know what it ment. Just wanted to know if it was a common term in Japan.
So from what I gather it can be positive or negative.

Well... normally so-and-so fever means positive (unless one uses the word as sarcasm or name of disease), but as far as Black Lagoon is concerned, maybe negative.
 
"Black Lagoon" this is anime series, I watched couple firsts episodes. It has abosolutely nothing to do with anything. Compare it to disney as you are seeking answers.
 


Yo, i think you should re-watch the section again. Whiteman's fever refers to Charles Whiteman (aka. Charles Joseph Whiteman)

Those maybe fiction, but the information used, might based on true history to bring out the previous history that was terribly massacre or dark history.

In Black Lagoon episode 6, Dutch says "Whitman fever" as in the mass shooter Charles Whitman. Dutch makes several references to him in the episode after he confronts Revy.
Whitman shot several university students from a tower.
Saying Revy has Whitman fever is basically dutch saying shes going a crazy and it just shooting people indiscriminately.
Old thread I know but figured I'd say my piece anyway.
