Hey guys, I'm going to Japan in January and have a severe allergy to walnuts/ pecans (i can eat peanuts, almonds, cashews etc) and I was just wondering what food's to watch out for.

I found this on a previous thread:
ナス窶樞?堙哉段ニ鍛ニ団窶堙姑但ニ椎槌停?ケニ樽窶堋ェ窶堋?窶堙ィ窶堙懌?堋キツ。
Watashi wa nuts no arerugi ga arimasu. (I have an allergy to nuts.)

Which I will use when asking about food, or maybe I will use "Watashi wa nuts no arerugi desu. Kore o taberaremasu ka?"

I don't speak Japanese but I will keep those in my wallet at all times.

Thanks in advance!!!!!!

If you go to a bakery, they are pretty darned good about listing the ingredients. Walnuts are usually written in katakana as クルミ.

ah awesome ill definately keep that written down!

are there any types of food that are commonly paired with walnuts? ive read a bit and have seen miso and walnut come up quite a bit together

On the savoury side of things, there is くるみ和え (kurumiae)- vegetables (usually green veg spinach or similar) with a walnut dressing. In general you might want to keep an eye out for sauces/dressings which may have ground nuts in.

Walnuts are not commonly used. My wife said a special mochi in Sendai called kurumi-yubeshi is about all she knows. I saw whole walnuts on top of one cookie from Kanazawa, but it was so obvious that you couldn't miss it.

ah ok that makes me feel a bit better, what nuts are commonly used in japanese cooking???
