Travel logistics and general information.

Basically, I have always wanted to visit Japan. Where is not important as I feel that I would love to explore most if not all of Japan. Anyhow, what I'd like to know is a few simple things. How much would myself (Canadian) need to actually enjoy Japan. How long? How much? and when durning the year would be best? Thanks in advance!
