It seems the Simpsons Movie won't be making it to Japan
until spring 2008. And I expect it'll be dubbed. Even if you're fluent in Japanese, a lot of the subtle Simpsons humour will be lost.

It seems to be coming to Taiwan and South Korea in August (2007) though. The trailers are subtitled, so I'm hoping the film will be

I know this seems like a crazy idea, but do any JREFers in Japan fancy a weekend in S Korea, taking in a visit to the cinema to see the film ??? And of course, hit the town before and after ?!
 
I dont think its that crazy, id be up for it if i was living in Japan now. I was going to go to Korea this summer, so if you do go let me know how it was

Hmm...It's an interesting idea...

I don't know, that would make an awful expensive movie!

I'm sure that when it comes to Japan next year, it'll be available both dubbed and subtitled, like most movies are. I for one would never want to see the Simpsons dubbed, but I'm sure there's hope.
 
Oh my, I am so into seeing this movie, finally, so many rumors for many years, and I am finally gonna be able to experience this in the big scream, too good I will be able to make it here in Mexico before I leave. I have huge expectations for this movie.

I prefer the English version, movies, especially comedy ones are not suppossed to be dubbed as it loses its humor, however, the Spanish dubbed (sic) version of the Simpsons is as good as the American for my taste.

i think i now want to see it dubbed in Japanese.
there's probably shows dubbed on youtube, right?
 
Yeah, I'm starting to think that if they tried hard, they might be able to make dubbed version better than subtitles themselves; I've never seen a subbed animated comedy and can't imagine how that really works...
No Sukotto, I couldn't find any on Youtube.

I've just heard today that the movie was written by the good old writers, so I have a feeling that it's going to be good, and I'm sure they put a lot of thoughts into a big screen movie for the Simpsons lovers.

You wouldn't understand anyway, though, right ? Old Simpsons shows are already imported and dubbed to be shown on the Japanese network WOWWOW as they have been for years. What the consensus of viewers or critics is I'm not sure, just that it's done that way in other languages as well.
 
apparently Conan O'Brian used to write for the Simpsons.
i wonder if he contributed at all?

No, he didn't, here are the writing credits, the actual "writers" of the movie are more or less the ones who wrote the screenplay (the second list), particularly Simpsons notable writers such as Ian Maxtone Graham, John Swarzwelder, Mike Scully, Jon Vitti, Al Jean, Groening, & James L. Brooks.

Thanks frosty... actually, I don't think it's crazy either! I love travelling but don't do enough of it, so this is an excellent excuse to haul my @rse the very short distance to S Korea and see what it's like. Plus the I'm flying to Korea to see a film line will be fun to use in conversation.

But think of it as a weekend in S Korea with the bonus of seeing the Simpsons Movie!

A dubbed version would lose most of the subtlety of the humour I feel. So would sub-titles of course, but at least you've got the choice if you can understand both languages.

I've bought Simpsons DVDs here in Japan, and have watched the dubbed versions with my Japanese friends. The first thing I noticed is that they family don't call themselves by their names... even when they're fighting it's still okaasan, otousan, ani-chan, imouto-chan instead of Maarge! Homy BAAARRRT!!! Aw Liiisa. I know it's the Japanese way of addressing family members, but it just doesn't seem appropriate here...

And my Japanese friends only laughed at the slapstick... nearly all the dialogue jokes seemed to be either missed or not considered amusing.

So I'd recommend seeking out dubbed versions only for curiosity or Japanese study reasons, not for comedy...
