Tech Sony Mobility: Sony to enter EV market

On 4 January, Sony announced that it will set up a subsidiary this spring to mass-produce electric vehicles. Sony presented its new electric SUV prototype dubbed Vision-S 02 at the CES 2022 consumer tech show in Las Vegas. The vehicle, which will be manufactured by a company in Austria, is equipped with next-generation mobile communication technology known as 5G. It is currently road-tested in Austria.

I bet it could be the best there is however you will have to use Sony charging stations to charge it (proprietary connectors, voltage, and handshake), Sony tires (because no others are compatible and they won't allow third parties to manufacture them), Sony windshield wipers (for the same reason), and you can only drive on Sony roads and park in Sony parking spots. ;P

And it supports only Firewire, not USB.

They love arguing on Facebook over electric only cars. It seems batteries and charging stations are the most negative aspects.

The majority of people don't venture far from home or drive more than 100 miles a day. I've had plugin hybrids which I really liked. No range limits but you can go all-electric for short distances.

No, you don't. You can charge on a 110/120v 20A circuit if you want, it will just take a while. The higher voltage and higher AMP charging will make it faster though. You could also use 220v 20A (which most houses either already have or can have easily installed) and be faster than the 110v 20A charge. I believe many electric cars come with, or at least have available, charging adapters for different charging options.

They can all charge from 110V 15A outlets but it's very slow so you would want to get a level-2 charger which I think is 240V 40A. So I had an extra powerline run to my garage. For a full EV, I don't think a 110V charger would be practical.

Depends on how much you drive. The US one usually installs a 240v 50A circuit but you can in some cases go a little higher I have seen 60 though I have 50. Just remember the 80% rule meaning don't pull 100% amps for extended periods you should just pull 80% for extended periods so keep that in mind for your home EVSE. On DCFC charging time that depends on both the car and charger but it is typically about half an hour. Some older chargers and lower cars can take an hour or more likely about 50 minutes. For regional driving you can do it all from home charging or work charging (I have l2 stations at my office as well and all state parks here). With my car I typically stop around every 200 miles to charge on a road trip, gives you a break. I do drive electric and usually only drive it as far as a bit into the next state. Some people hard wire a EVSE at their home, I prefer a NEMA 14-50 outlet. I also bring a portable one with me which came with the car that I use in RV outlets when camping.

For most people who do regional driving the charging time may in a way be thought of as zero as you plug in when you get home like charging a phone or whatever. There are recommendations on charging only to 80% and such but you can set a timer or limits if you wanted, anyway you don't stand there and hold the charger you plug it in and go in and watch TV and eat dinner. Road trips depending on charger location you can have lunch or go take a leak or stretch your legs but yes you are waiting 20 minutes to in bad cases 50 minutes or so it's really not that bad.
