Sekigahara and Tokugawa

Hi, everyone. I have question about battle of Sekigahara. I realized that this motif, and motif of Tokugawa recure in many stories. Can you tell me why this battle is so important? And this battle took place for what? I will be grateful for your help. Forgive me my poor english

Well from my knowledge after the loss by the Toyotomi-clan at Sekigahara, the Tokugawa clan was installed as the leaders of Japan and ushered in the "Edo-jidai" here in Japan.

Not exactly. Toyotomi Hideyoshi died leaving an infant son as the head of Japan. He chose the most powerful men in Japan to hold the reins of power until his son could rule the country. Not long after he died, they started infighting. The 2 most influential people to step up were Ieyasu and Ishida Mitsunari. Mitsunari claimed to be fighting for the Toyotomi but I'm sure he would have seized power if he had the chance.
Long story short, a key person turned against Mitsunari in the middle of the battle and Ieysasu won ushering in the Edo Jidai.

The Toyotomi Clan was destroyed 15 years later.

Thanks for the "correction" here. During that time period werent there many daimyo fighting amongst themselves trying to gain power at the time?

At this particular time, Japan was basically divided into 3 camps. Ieyasu's side, Mitsunari's side and neutral people. Before Hideyoshi came to power the scale of fighting was much larger with several wars between several competing powers at the same time.

Try to find this book.

The Osprey military history series is a really good series. They are fantastic resources and beautifully illustrated. Although few are by noteworthy scholars, they are still worth a look, and they'll only run you about $15-20 American.

I have an opinion that the importance was defined by historical scholars in the latter half of Edo era. If Edo era were to end within twenty years, Sekigahara battle would never have gotten be so important.

Takeda was destroyed by Tokugawa and Oda
Sanada was a vassal of the Takeda clan. . He becomes a lord in the Ueda city, Nagano.

Why was not feudalism able to be destroyed though Tokugawa was able to unite Japan?

Hidetada Tokugawa, His force(38,000) was delayed in coming to Sekigahara because of Sanada
Therefore, Tokugawa could not help but give land as a reward to other feudal lords, though Tokugawa had won.

Choshu (Mouri) and Satsuma (Shimazu) were both western forces loyal to the Tokugawa.
I think they never forgot their disgrace at Sekigahara against the Tokugawa.
Is the Meiji Restoration connected to Sekigahara?

Thank you. I recommend that book as well.

(Although I really wish, in hindsight, that I hadn't converted the dates to the Western calendar.)
