Hello .. im just curious here ... .
I really like japan ... but Japanese dont respect my country and i guess me . Why Japanese boats steal our fish and why Japanese ppl still trying to claim Sahalin their territory ?
As you all know you lost Sahalin in WW2. Germany has accepted all the consequences for starting the war , both wars . Japan on the other hand has a really interesting side ... I will kill thousands of people and i will be just fine without paying anyone anything . Your country went to the war with one purpose ... to gain the land and world domination ( Dont deny it ! ) , so here is punishment ... lose your own land .
So .. tell me ... were im wrong ..

I wonder if you might be generalizing some points a bit too much, in your post above. It might be good to try to be a little more specific.

I moved this here since it had more to do with Japan than not. I ask for you understanding there, please.
 

If you make a serious topic, include serious arguments as well. Just by stating which side they fought on during the World War is nowhere near a valid argument.

What i was asking is why Japan is claiming Sakhalin .. There are no question that japan had lost it to Russia in ww2 and there has been a lot of documents sign with China USA and rest of Allys that islands are indeed Russians.
So.. whats up? I just want to know .. you know ... .
P.S. : I understand that this is one of the hottest topics for Russia and Japan for over 40 years now and im asking this because soon Japanese Prime Minister will visit Russia and they will have to talk about this issue ... our Mass media had been talking about this for a while so it made me curious what regular Japanese man and women think about it . After all we are neighbors.

Do you really know what are the 4 islands, Kunashiri, Etorofu, Shakotan, Habomai, Japan claims?
Google earth tells you how small they are...

It is nice of you to know some schools in Hokkaido teach Russian and newly translated "the Brothers Karamazov" sell well here. And I know some cosplay events in your country.

When a crazy anti-US dictator would break the J-US treatry, it would usually take another one year to start WWIII.
Japan trusted the USSR's neutrality too much.
Stalin just ignored the international law.

What can we do now?

Hi Mugen, just to clarify the issue here as you seem to be confused. The Russo-Japan territorial dispute does not involve Sakhalin. It's the Kuril islands that are in dispute.

He's complaining about fish being harvested nearby by Japanese ships.
 

Russians must study history at schools (not at Russian schools).

1. Japan and Russia concluded a treaty to confirm the territory in 1895, which included 4 small islands near Hokkaido.

2. Japan gained South half of Sahalin after Japan-Russo war, but lost after WWII. Japan never claims it.

3. Soviet led by Stalin broke the international law - the peace treaty between Japan and Soviet just before the ends of WWII and took the 4 islands.

4. If Russia doesn't like to return the 4 islands, that's fine to us. Japan will not conclude peace treaty with Russia, and will not help Russia to develop Siberia. Russians should be tied up with China, and Siberia will be taken by them as you can imagine.

5. You said....Russia can occupy the 4 islands as punishment to Japan....
Russia (Soviet) attained a full victory over Germany in Europe, but Russia lost Ukraine, Belorussia, etc. Russia shrank very much although the country is pround of being a victor. WHY Russia lost the land? - a new type of punishment?

Japan does not rush for regaining such tiny isalnds.....but if Russia changed its mind, please let us know. It's all up to you.

It is August 15 that Japan did a cease-fire in World War II.
It is August 28 that the Soviet Union occupied Sakhalin.
 
The issue of Sakhalin(sk) has come to the fore primarily because of the huge reserves of oil that have been discovered there.

Russia has no distinct rights over Sakhalin - the people who originally inhabited those and the Kuril islands (The Ainu) have recently been recognised by Japan as an indigenous group - something the UN will recognise and most probably ratify later this year.

The issue of soverignity will remain contentious, post-war politics, cease-fire / capitulation agreements notwithstanding - I think Russia and Japan will reach a mutual settlement on the future of both Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands.

I for one am looking very closely at this development, having worked in De Kastri earlier this year and with my ever improving Japanese proficiency - I'm keen to see wether Japanese speaking Petrochemical Engineers will be needed in the next few years.
