Rasen aka
The Spiral is the original sequal to Ringu (original because it follows the story in the orginal novel by Koji Suzuki. [Ringu, Rasen, Loop] The film came out the same year as Ringu, but not made by the same director.
Ringu 2 (1999) came out the year after
Ringu (1998), and they are both directed by the same director, Hideo Nakata, who is also known for his film Dark Water.
Apparently, Hideo Nakata made his own version of the sequal because Rasen/The Spiral was not his taste...In fact, Rasen was a flop in Japan because it was not as scary as Ringu, although it stayed faithful to the novel....
I personally like
Ringu 2 best, I have both Rasen and Ringu 2. The reason being that Ringu 2 is very creepy....however, at least a viewing of Rasen is definately worth it if you want to see the original, which is also scary, but different...very different...it is very sci-fi, thriller, and horror at the same time.

After the mysterious death of professor Ryuji (from Ringu 1) and the disappearance of his ex-wife and little son, a friend of his is called in to do the autopsy. Strange visions and dreams about Ryuji starts to haunt his nights and he takes on the autopsy to satisfy his curiosity behind Ryuji's death. It appears that Ryuji's cause of death is due to an infection of a hyper-growth form of smallpox in the lungs. But how can Ryuji contract smallpox internally? And why is this new form of smallpox never been seen before?
As if the circumstances behind his best friend's death weren't strange enough, the friend is soon contacted by Ryuji's former student and girlfriend Mai, who tells him that Ryuji was investigating a video tape that killed people after seven days upon viewing. Odd enough, a reporter and coworker of Ryuji's ex-wife, Reiko, soon comes knocking on Ando's doors about "the tape" . . .

Mai Takano tries to investigate the death of her boyfriend, Koichi, who died in part 1. But the police also want to question Takano concerning her proximity to another death, that of Koichi's former father-in-law, and the disappearance of his ex-wife, Reiko, the journalist who began investigating the video tape curse. Plagued by premonitions and visions, hounded by the police, Takano stumbles upon Yoichi, Reiko's son, who after viewing the videotape has acquired strange supernatural powers. Although now mute, Takano seems able to communicate with him and wins the frightened boy's confidence in order to involve him in scientific experiments carried out by Dr Ikuma, the aims of which are to break the curse of Sadako once and for all .
And...of course there is
Ring 0 - the prequal to Ringu, in which we follow the life of Sadako as a child and young student. Good film!!!!
And there is a Korean version called
Ring Virus, which is ok. Has some scenes which is mentioned in the novel, but not seen in Ringu.... :wavey:
