I just arrived in Japan and my host family has NTT ISDN for thier desktop. They also have a v30 tower modem made by NTT. However, I want to connect my laptop to the internet. How could I do this or is it even possible?
Thanks!

If they setup sharing on the internet connection, you can connect to their computer via LAN cable (needs to be crossover) and use it that way. Otherwise, you need to hook up the modem directly to your machine, install the driver, and use it that way.

Remember as you surf that it's a normal phone call, so your host family will be paying X yen per minute to use it.

Easiest was is to connect it to your USB port, install the driver, and dial away. It should work okay -- I had an NTT modem way back in the day.

If you could have suggested them to use ADSL...

n/w, I hope the above suggestion works.
