NTT e-Drone Technology, an affiliate of NTT East Inc., has developed a laser-equipped drone designed to keep wild birds away from poultry farms, adding a new tool to Japan's avian flu defences.

Its first real-world use is likely to be in Chiba Prefecture, which recorded the most bird flu cases nationwide last season. With winter approaching, the prefecture has stepped up precautions and is pressing poultry farmers to remain vigilant. A dedicated subsidy scheme is now in place to help cover part of the cost of introducing the drone. The aircraft measures about one metre by one metre with its arms fully extended. A device mounted on the body projects red and green laser light onto the roofs of chicken houses and surrounding areas, creating a deterrent intended to keep wild birds at a distance.

I tried red & green lasers on the pigeons that steal my squirrel's food. Even when placed on their eyes close up , they took no notice. Maybe mine are too weak?
