A: Please introduce yourselves.
T: I'm someone named Tatsuro who's the vocalist for MUCC.
S: I'm the drummer, Satotsu.(2)
Y: I'm MUCC's bassist, Yukke.
M: I'm Miya, the guitarist.
A: Welcome!
M: Thank you.

A: Were you trying to copy him/her?
M: Nope
A: Oh you're so cool.
[everyone laughs]
A: So this is your first appearance in 6 months on Beat Shuffle. Last time Tatsuro, Miya and special guest, writer Yuketsuko was here.
T: Ooh yeah, she was here.
Y: Yeah, yeah, she was.
A: She was gathering information/interviewing you guys for her article for Fool's Mate. This is MUCC's first appearance here since then, and just a little bit ago, we announced the dates for the big live at the end of the year, Live Side 2005, on this show. We're pleased you're participating again this year.
T: No problem.
A: Thanks for participating despite the busy schedule. Today is set up so that there's a MUCC half-day special on Nack 5 -- after this program, you're probably going to eat somewhere, then starting at 12am, the new live program, "Midnight 69 City" (4) will air.
T: Ooooh. 1st show. Then the guest will be Asai-san. (The DJ)
A: That's impossible because after that, you guys are going to go on Radio X at 1am.
T: Yup
A: So you guys are going to be in Saitama the whole day. I hope you guys have a relaxing day. You guys went to Europe this summer, were you busy this summer?
T: We were busy, weren't we?
Y: Yes, we were busy.
A: How long was the Europe tour?
Y: We were in Europe for about 8 days.
A: And how many lives?
Y: Three.
A: Oh then you had plenty of time!
T: Nonononono
Y: Nonononono
A: Why? Why? What did you do when you didn't have lives?
T: Some of us went sightseeing. Satochi and I don't have any instrests in sightseeing. But we didn't have one whole day with nothing to do.
Y: Yeah
A: Were you constantly busy with photoshoots and interviews?
T: Yes yes
A: How was your first live overseas?
M: It was awesome.
A: What kind of people were at your shows?
M: The first one was a metal festaval.
A: So the other bands were like...
M: They were all metal bands.
A: So MUCC was on the unique side/an outcast.
M: Yes
A: Did you do the live in your MUCC make-up?
T: Yes. Why don't you ask Taturo how it went?
A: How did it go?
[laughs]
T: Oh it was awesome!
A: What about the MC?
T: It was supurb.
A: Did you do it in English?
T: Yes. I even said "phantastisch" (5)
[laughs]
T: In German.
A: Did you learn any other German words?
T: Yes, I did.
A: Like "guntac" (6)
T: I've never spoken it though.
A: What?
T: I didn't speak German at all.
A: Did you do the MC in Japanese?
T: I spoke some broken English, some broken German words, and used gestures and got through it.
A: Did the audience understand you?
T: They...should have.
A: Were there more males than females?
Y: There were more... No, actually it was about the same.
T: It was about 50-50 at the Germany gig and there were a little bit more females at the France gig.
A: The gig in Germany was the heavy metal festival?
M: Most of the audience were male at the metal festaval.
A: So that was Germany?
M: Yes, and the ratio was about the same at the one-man gig.
A: Isn't there a sacred ground for heavy metal in Germany?
T: Yeah, I thought we were screwed once we got to the venue. I thought we were in the "hokuso no henzo" world (7). And I saw everyone wearing leather jackets, and I thought we were screwed.
A: Did most the other bands play songs that have the fast two bass dadadadadan (bass drum imitation)?
M: Yeah, there were a lot of crazy high-toned vocalists.
[Tatsuro imitates the vocalists]
M: Yeah, there were a lot of those kind of bands.
A: So in midst of all these bands like Halloween, you guys were with those bands in the dressing room, right? (8)
M: Yes, we were.
A: Do they wear make-up?
M: Some goth bands wore make-up.
A: Did the other bands react in any way seeing you guys applying the white base make up and black eye make up?
T: Wait, you're misunderstanding, Asai-san.
A: Huh?
T: We don't wear white base make up any more.
A: Really?
[laughs]
A: What kind of make-up do you wear now?
T: Foundation, to make our skin look nicer.
A: The one you tried on me last year, right?
T: Yes, we don't put on the white stuff any more.
A: But it still looks like white paint.
T: Really?
A: Anyway, did the other bands react in any way seeing you guys wear a lot of make up?
T: I think they looked at us strangely.
A: And the audience were like, rraaaaaaaa [screams]?
T: Yeah. It was intense.
A: Please give an intense performance on December 30th.
M: I learned what this means [holds up a hand signal]
T: Oh yeah. This is "I love you"
A: Right, right.
T: And when you put your thumb in front, it kind of looks like a fox with a squished nose. This is supposed to be the "metal peace" sign.
A: Metal peace?
T: There's three 6's apparent... [points out the six's] This six here, this one here, and this one, and three 6's is bad luck.
A: Right, 666.
T: And they do this [raises hand]
A: That's so awesome! Like, this? [does it, but doesn't show on camera] But you're not a metal band.
T: Yes we are, we're a metal band.
A: Oh, ok. So you guys were reborn.
T: Yes
A: Did you buy any gifts or souvenirs in Europe?
M: I did.
A: Like what?
M: I bought an Eiffle Tower this tiny for a friend's band.
[laughs]
A: You can get that at an airport!
M: Yeah, I got it at the airport. I also got one of those magnets you put on the fridge with Mona Lisa's picture on it.
A: A magnet with the Mona Lisa painting?
M: Yeah, they said "I don't need this!/What kind of gift is this?" when I gave it to them.
A: [laughs] How about you, Yukke?
Y: I bought a pair of jeans...
A: For you?
Y: Yes, and I also got a T-shirt that says "Eiffle Tower" near the Eiffle Tower and sunglasses, and stuff like that. You know Yuketsuko? She came along with us, and she bought a shirt that says "Paris." That's about it.
A: That's cool! What about Satochi?
S: I bought fake caviar!
[laughs]
A: You can bring those back?
T: Same to the person on the right.
Y: I bought it too.
A: You bought it knowing it's fake?
S: Yes.
A: Does it taste the same?
T: [cuts in] It's like fake salmon roe.
A: So it's good if it tastes good.
T: Right, it's good as long as it tastes good.
A: Was it good?
T: No..
A: No?
M: Of course it's not good.
T: It was for other people, not for me.
A: Get the real thing.
T: But John said it tastes the same.

A: Who's John?
T: This guy who writes for a magazine in France.
A: Oooh. So did you guys take pictures in front of the Eiffle Tower?
Y: Yes, we did.
T: We were forced to take pictures.
A: You were forced to? You guys took pictures yourselves?
T: Yes, it was pretty fun. The Eiffle Tower is big.
A: Was it. Looks like you enjoyed your stay in Germany and France from the end of August to September. So by that time, was the recording for the new single done?
M: Yeah, the orchestra portion of it was done. (9)
A: So the vocals came after?
M: I beleive so.
A: I see. We're going to listen to the new single, which will be released on October 19th - that's the week after next week - and after this song, we'll talk about it. It would be great if Tatsuro can introduce this song for us.
T: I get to introduce it? Is that ok?
A: Yes, please.

PART TWO
A: That was MUCC's new single, "Saishuu ressha" and it will be released on October 19th! I heard you guys had a hard time choosing the songs for the new single because you've made so many of them. Why did you decide to choose "Saishuu ressha" out of all of the songs you've made?
M: Hmm, I don't know. We had some other songs we could have released as a single, but I think this song expressed who we are.
A: The whole song sounds sweet.
T: Yeah, we get that a lot. I haven't heard the word "nostalgic" associated with our work for quite a while. A lot of our earlier works were described as nostalgic.
A: Is that what you guys intended the album cover to look like also?
T: Yeah
A: The design consists of a record that looks 1970's folk-esque. And when you open it, the record's design is also on the CD
M: We've done this before, but we accidentally did it on a 8cm CD.
A: That's tiny. You can't see the design then.
M: It didn't work out so well.
T: It looked like a tiny record.
A: So it ended up being mini-sized. Well, this time it's on a 12cm maxi single, and it looks like a record. Tatsuro looks as if he's feeling ennui...
T: Ennui? I don't know what ennui means, but it sounds real familiar, like when you hear it, you're like, nnnnnuh, and think, what is ennui?
A: Like, dull and tired.
T: Ah, ennui. Yeah, that's ennui.
A: There's a picture of your profile, with you looking like you're lost in your thoughts, on the jacket.
T: That is ennui.
A: What kind of image did you have when writing lyrics to this song?
T: With ennui.
A: No, seriously.
T: Was that a bad answer?
A: Yes.
T: When I heard the song, all these memories, thoughts, and words came out of me and so I used those to make the lyrics.
A: This song has a train theme. "Akanezora" is also in this single. This is gorgeous song is written by Satochi.
S: Yes!
A: Just a moment ago, you said you were already tired from talking, even though you've only spoken about 2 words. We have to have you speak more. What kind of image did you have in mind when writing "Akanezora"?
S: I wrote it during the Olympics.
A: That was a long time ago.
S: Yes. I imagined the Olympics.
A: You imagined the Olympics. Miya wrote the lyrics for this song - what kind of shape does Satochi's songs take, in terms of melody?
S: It's usually just the song. He has this little "telekon" (1) and he'd say "ready?", bring it up to the mic, push the play button, and we'd listen to it in the studio. But these days, he's evolving and he brings in guitar riffs.
A: So he previously didn't play the guitar?
M: Nope, he had his song and...
A: Does he hum it to you?
M: with his little keyboard, he played the song.
T: That's how the pros do it.
[laughs]
M: And once the song's in his head, he makes it into an actual song.
A: Are the chords added later in the process?
M: After hearing it, if the melody I imagine is the same as the one he thought of, then we're done.
A: So lately, he's already got the chords down before sharing his song to you?
M: Last time, he brought in a guitar riff. Just one.
A: Just one..
M: It was good.
A: Are the melodies he bring in like "lalala~"/sung?
M: Yes, it's basically just that.
A: No lyrics or anything?
M: None.
T: Satochi is a good singer.
A: Wow.
T: He might sing for you if there's an opportunity.
A: You guys might have to make a section for Satochi to sing on "Midnight 69 City".
T: Maybe, maybe not. I doubt it, though. I'm sorry.
A: So you listened to Satochi's song and imagined a sunset scenery?(2)
M: Yes. The song actually was made while we were making the "Kuchiki no tou" album, but didn't make it into the record. However, while making the song, I had a strong image of what the lyrics should be like and I asked if I could write the lyrics. I actually didn't write the lyrics out because it was all in my head. We finished recording the instrumental parts, and finally, the day before the vocal recording...
A: You finally wrote it?
M: The writing process quick! The lyrics were complete in my head. I woke up at 8 in the morning...
A: Why didn't you write it the day before?
M: Well... I was sleepy.
[laughs]
A: So you woke up early...
M: I woke up at 8 and showed Tatsuro the lyrics.
T: There's nothing more horrific than not knowing the lyrics to a song right before recording it.
A: But you knew the melody, so you could have been practicing.
T: But still, I was worried that I'll studder or mess up a word while singing. It's scary.
A: It's good that he brought the lyrics, though.
T: The recording went smoothly.
A: Then that's good. It's exciting to get the lyrics on the day of the recording.
M: It's not like we were in a hurry, or that I couldn't write the lyrics -- I had confidence in this song.
A: Confidence in the image you had in your head through all that time.
M: In the contrary, it was difficult to make it shorter and more compact.
A: I see. It was stressful for the other three members, wasn't it?
T: Yes, especially for me.
[laughs]
A: This single will be released on October 19th. On November 23rd, the new album will be released! Are the songs on this album completed?
M&T: Yes
A: The vocal parts are done as well?
T: Yes
A: The title of the album and further details will be announced in "Midnight 69 City," airing today at midnight. Will all of the previous singles be on this album?
M: Yes, they will.
A: What does the outcome of this album sound like?
T: Ah, yes.
A: Yes? I asked what it sounds like.
T: Oooh! I heard it wrong. That's the most important part, isn't it? It's the most important part, Yukke.
Y: Yes! What does the album sound like?
T: Yeah.
Y: If you sum it up in one word, it's full of great songs (3).
[laughs]
A: That's obvious!
Y: They're all really great songs. I listened to the album and thought "ooh, it's good." There's a couple cool songs, too. It's supurb.
A: What was the most challenging for you, Yukke?
Y: The most challenging? Umm... Getting the groove.
[laughs]
T: He constantly asked me... "Tatsu? Tatsu? Listen to this listen to this. Isn't this bass line awesome? It turned out great." I heard this 3 times a day.
A: So there are great phrases you have a lot of confidence in.
Y: Well, I think it all turned out great.
A: This album will be released on November 23rd. Will you be airing the songs from the new album before the album's release date on "Midnight 69 City"?
M&T: Yes.
A: I'll be waiting for that. I'd like to play one song which will be on the new album.
M: Yes, it will.
A: Can you introduce the song for us, Miya?
M: Sure. "Ame no orchestra."
