movie theatres with english subtitles?

ok, so my question here should be quite clear - I wonder if movie theatres in Tokyo have english subtitle on japanese movies? well, I know they do not (usually) have it, but just wonder if it can be found on some specific days or times or theatres? i would love to go and see some japanese movie, but my japanese ability is far far away from understanding that much

Once/twice a year, the Japan Foundation holds the culture and arts event, the Japan Foundation Film Series.
The films are a bit old ones, but they are with English subtitles.

2. Most DVDs of Studio Ghibli by Hayao Miyazaki, Disney anime or American movies are subtitled/dubbed in J/E languages.
Just check out DVD packages in a rental DVD shop nearby.

4. Try to find in the Internet.
I found a movie, Ikiru, with English subtitle.

The only time I was able to see a movie with English subtitles in Japan was at the 2001 Tokyo International Film Festival. Naturally, since the film festival is to showcase new movies to an international audience for future distribution, it wouldn't do for potential buyers to not be able to understand the movie.

great information! I actually have friend who works for Japan Foundation, so there is no chance I'll miss this!

yes, my point is to listen Japanese and read English, as I use to do, often, watching animes etc, but I was wondering if I can watch newly released movie here and now that way. e.g. there is now "Crows ZERO" in theatres, and I would love to see it

I found that I can choose a menu, "dubbed in Japanese" and "subtitled in English", in a DVD. I think I can do it because it is an American movie.

pipokun, thank you once more... i guess i will have to stick to dvds and similar ways to watching movie.. for now, at least! i hope one day my japanese will be at least at level of three year old japanese girl, so i will go and watch anime for that age in theatres

naoui, when the embassy of Japan in your country is close to your home, you can find lots of cultural events. Probably Alma would envy you for the weekly movie program in the embassy.

This won't answer your question above, but if you ever want to see a "foreign" film, i.e. Chinese, Korean, French, etc., with English rather than Japanese subtitles, you should consult the listings at Roppongi Hills Cinema. Even when the films are not part of the Tokyo International Film Festival, Roppongi Hills sometimes show these movies with English subtitles.
