Ohayo Gozaimasu. ^-^
i am a korean in america planning to move to japan with a friend of mine within the next year.[sometime after christmas of 2008]
We are going there to play music We are fans of Miyavi, The GazettE, Dir en grey, and Japan itself.
Both of us plan on living there for........a long time.
We are trying to learn japanese, but we feel we wont know it well enough to write music just yet.
Both of us already know the basics, and we are trying to learn how to read but as of now romanji is all we can do.
Would it be possible for someone to become "pen pals" with us and help us translate english lyrics to japanese into romanji?

This wont work.

The major problem is this; you will write the song, and then English lyrics over the top, which will be in time with the music. Then it will be translated into Japanese, and you will be hard put to make it fit with the song.

Also, the best way to learn Japanese is to hit the books.
And one more thing, you say you are going to live in Japan early 2009? You definitely need to learn the language yourself to do that.

I suggest you listen to Japanese bands, and take apart their songs. You will be able to see how Japanese songs are put together. Learn to read passages on the net in Japanese, and understand them. Then try writing songs.

I suggest that you visit Japan for maybe a couple of months in early 2009, to see how your Japanese is coming along and whether or not you can survive there. You need to know common phrases like 'where is the milk, I am sure I bought some earlier at the store' rather than song lyrics, such as 'My love is the only thing to me, la-dada' (or whatever)

Hmm, I don't know it to be honest, as I have no similar experience, but couldn't they play songs in English? I mean sure, probably they wouldn't make a killing, maybe in small clubs and such? As "live musicians" playing popular songs.
I think it depends a lot on your "budget". If you can afford to go there and vegetate somehow for like a year, I suppose you'd learn the language fast.
As for magevampjoe's advice, yes, thats the only way, bury yourself in books, and don't pull your head out.

I agree there derfel, they could sing in English. However, (trying not to sound racist, as I hate racism) koreans and Japanese look similar, so you dont have the added attraction of being American/European/ non-asian which fits in with english lyrics. Many American bands do well singing in English because they are american, whereas Japanese people would possibly not think much of another asian singing in English. Again, I'm not being rascist, but this is how the world often works. However, although you wont make a lot of money, you could have quite a bit of fun as a band in Japan. You would learn the language if you dealt with Japanese daily.

I'm sure though that, as derfel did, most people here would agree that the best way is to hit the books NOW. Don't procrastinate.

Well yeah, I understand that, but at the same time a singer probably has at least a little talent at pronunciation, so he could probably learn existent Japanese songs without actually understanding them. And probably people wouldn't notice/care in some rundown bar where bikers go (are there even bikers in Japan? ) to get drunk to boot.

hehe im not trying to procrastinate.
its just that while im trying to learn phrases such as "where is the milk" i just thought it would be nice to have some lyrics that i could memorize and play when i get there. and also the lyrics would help with my pronounciation[sp]

I really dont want to be english singers there. they rarely get famous. i only know of Beat Crusaders.

Hmm Anthem did nice with English songs... well, it was in Anthem's time, Heavy Metal seems to be dead over there, so I don't know.

OH and about translating lyrics and them not fitting the melody. i write melodies to lyrics, so i need lyrics before i make the guitar lines.

Well... they would have thousands of fans pretty much anywhere. Say, even in Iraq they'd fill the national stadium or whatever they have, regardless of the chaos and bloodletting.

I mean, there's no craze like when the NWOBHM wave began.

Anyhow, Im glad that they had a nice gig there (seriously, even if its Metallica im glad).

How come you hate them? I don't like them either to be honest, but I still they're a great band, playing great music for people who like it.
By the way, please listen to some Manowar, you will detest it, certainly... hey or Amon Amarth, har har har.
Just read a few minutes ago that Manowar's quite active in Japan, interesting, guess Japanese youth has thet egoistic "**** you all" attitude too, that is great, indeed very good.
Oh how I'd like to hear some engrish Manowar lyrics.

The singer has a horrible voice, and their songs are really repitive. All songs sound the same -.-
