There are a few japanese people here, but I don't think many use JREF for pen pals. I don't know...You could try;

I had a pen pal from here for a while

and there is a pen pal ads section on JREF, and also 'World Friends'/ 'JFriends', but you have to pay if you want to contact people.

I have several Pen Pals. One Pen-Pal has been almost two years !

First, and this is funny, Pen Pals for Male-to-Male does n-o-t work. Men are too Macho. Male-to-Female, or Female-to-Male works OK.

When I developed a Pen Pal, I made sure that the person knew my age roughly (I am over 45 years !). Also my single/marriage status. Keep that honest.

My goal is to have Pen Pals in Asia, and help with English. My Pen Pals are younger than me. Some are married, some are single, but all want to improve their English.

NOTE 01: Many Pen-Pals (almost all), will drop out withen 2-3 weeks. So after 2 years, I have only three long-term Pen Pals.

NOTE 02: Protect yourself from identity theft. Give age, not what day you were born. For several weeks protect identity until you are sure of the person. Always give a fake birthday (no harm in that). Never tell anyone where you were born, or just lie about what city. Just use some common sense.
