Long-running scripts

Hi, these days when I go to re-edit a message that I've previously posted, the site hangs with a "long-running script" error when I save changes, and then basically goes tits up. The changes are actually saved, though, and all I seem to have to do to recover is close the tab and re-open, so it is only mild on the annoyance scale. At one time it used to work. I cannot say exactly when it broke.

Using Win7/IE10.

Seems to be another IE issue. You wouldn't happen to know which script is executed, it should be indicated somewhere in the browser.

I don't know how to tell which script is causing the problem. There is nothing in the message to indicate this.

Yes, I thought so. Hopefully one of the solutions mentioned in the links I posted will help! I couldn't reproduce this error in IE, it might be related to high server load (in case of automatic server backups, updates, etc).

Thanks, I can (supposedly) easily stop the script (after a while) because a message pops up with a "Cancel" button. However, it seems not to cancel cleanly, and either another long script immediately starts, or something else goes wrong. I'm not sure there is anything further I can do within IE, but, as I say closing the tab and reopening it recovers with my changes all correctly saved.

HOWEVER ...

I just tried it again a couple of times and it works perfectly; no delay at all. This is strange because to me it did not have the feeling of a server load issue, or something that might come and go or take varying amounts of time to complete. The behaviour seemed consistently broken over a period of time, and when it hung it did not look like it would ever recover itself.

Anyway .... no big deal ...

Seems I spoke too soon. Tried it again with a different edit and it hung as before. Perhaps it is something specific to do with the nature of the edit. There seem to be two modes: works instantly or hangs forever. I have never seen anything in between.

I see if I can reproduce this in different browsers. Have you tried to implement any of the suggestions linked? It seems you can suppress the error message in IE.

Also, does this occur regardless of the post's size?

Hi, I had a でいる once before that confused me. Here's another one:

留守中いい子でいるんですよ。


Is で a particle here? Is いい子で adverbial (as I think we eventually concluded the earlier example was)? Or is でいる some kind of inflection of the copula or verbal fusion of copula and いる?

Thomas, I was able to edit all three of the above test posts without any problem. However, when I try to edit the original of the third one at でいる it hangs with "long-running script" message.

As it seems to be random, it might be related to Google Adsense. I will graduate implement the new Adsense code which is loaded asynchronously to see if it improves performance.

I haven't tested this thoroughly, but is it possible it could be forum-related? As I mentioned, the messages in this thread edit OK for me, and I just edited a post in "Learning English" without problem. However, when I try it in "Learning Japanese" it always (or usually) seems to hang. Just a thought....

The usage of Japanese characters shouldn't have any impact on this (as the page encryption is the same), but if you state that it happens in Japanese-language threads only I will have to investigate further.

It is not specifically to do with Japanese characters. I deliberately put some in one of the test posts above and it edited OK.

I have switched to Google's asynchronous Adsense codes. I wonder if you still receive the "long-running script" error message or if Adsense has indeed been the culprit.

Hi, I just tested it, and unfortunately the long-running script problem is still just the same.

By the way, it was really only through good luck that I noticed your reply. Is there any way in the forums to see a list of all recent activity in threads in which one has participated?

I guess you could subscribe to threads. Also, your profile lists all recent activities related to you and/or your friends.

Sorry, it's a bit too complicated for me to easily understand. Is there any way to get a list of threads that I've participated in which also have new messages (messages that I haven't yet viewed)? I mean an on-site list. I don't want to get emails about this.

I always use the "New Posts" button. Threads you've replied to will have a green arrow next to them.

Thanks, that's a good tip. Do you know what definition of "New" is used in that feature?

"New" refers to the unread posts since the last visit. However, these features seem to have changed a lot since vB3 and through the various increments of vB4.

Just a little update on the "long-running script" error in Internet Explorer: I can confirm this error in IE10 and IE11; it seems to be related to the text editor.

I have found a thread on an another forum dealing with that issue. Here's a few things they recommend:

"Long running script" error messages are specific to Internet Explorer. These messages are generally intended for developers who are testing and building a website You should be able to get rid of them by disabling certain browser settings:

• Open Internet Explorer
• Click the 'Tools' menu, and then select 'Internet Options'
• Click the 'Advanced' tab, select the 'Disable script debugging (Internet Explorer)' and 'Disable script debugging (Other)' check boxes
• Clear the 'Display a notification about every script error' check box, and then click OK
• Press F12 and then click the "Console" tab in the second row of menus.
• After the consoles are open, browse the site or hit refresh or whatever and pay attention to the last errors that appear when it hangs. Note there will almost always be errors of some sort, such as CSS issues, or browser-specific settings that are "errors" on alternate browsers, etc.
• Ditch IE and kiss your problems goodbye!

Also, I am currently reworking the default style. There will be almost no cosmetic changes, but the style will be more closely based on vB4's default style (no more onmouseover effects).
