I read this (somewhere), South-Korea is like Poland was in 1900-1945.


A small country inbetween two giant countries
->Poland, inbetween Germany and Russia
->Korea, inbetween China and Japan

Both overrun by their neighbours. Both occupied by
their neighbours.
 
I think you could find this similarity with more than just Korea. War is nothing new I'm just wondering where are you going with this?

Yeah, I was hoping he'd (lexico) would be able to post something on N&S relations recently, and if the Sunshine Policy (I know very little about that)was still ongoing.
 
I wouldnt really say that Japan is all that 'giant' in comparison with South Korea.
Previously yes... it may have been 'overrun by their neighbours', but thats a thing in the past now. I cant say I have seen any particular area overrun by any other nationalities... unless you count Itaewon which is overrun by military from the U.S? But they aren't doing any violent warfare or causing too much harm.
Its a bit steep to say that Korea 'is' like what Poland 'was' like.
More like that Korea 'was' similar to what Poland 'was' like?
 
South and North Korea are squashed between the three giants of East Asia which are the People's Republic of China in the west the Russian Federation in the north and Japan in the east.

I heard of some Japanese from Hawaii claiming to be Pacific Islanders.

Korea isn't the Ireland of Asia. Unless you talk about alcohol i guess.

->The USA had an active role in the liberation of both Nations each time.

For South Korea:
During WWII: - The USA defeated the country to the east (Japan) that was occupying Korea.
After WWII: - The USA defended South Korea from the country to the west/north (North Korea/China/USSR) that invaded it after WWII.

For Poland:
During WWII: - The USA defeated the country to the west (Nazi Germany) that was occupying Poland.
After WWII: - The USA was an enemy of the country to the east (USSR) that occupied Poland during the Cold War until the USSR's demise in 1991.

Other countries obviously had a role in the demise of Nazi Germany and in the Korean war, but I wanted to point out the USA's role because all the above doesn't apply to any other country.

Although not related to the topic (and maybe this whole post is...) does anyone have any information on the popularity of the USA in Poland as compared to South Korea? From what I understand, the majority of Polish people love the USA, while the majority of South Koreans hate the USA, but I could be mistaken.

EDIT: Also, During WWI, the USA had a part in the defeat of Germany who was occupying Poland, except I didn't include it above because it is not comparable to the situation with Korea.

I don't think Japan is the Great Britain of Asia. The Japanese lost the war in the end of their attempt to colonize Asia. Many of the ex British colonies are still with the commonwealth and most of the ex British colonies still use English in their official documents. I don't think any of the ex Japanese colonies use Japanese in their official documents.
 
OK, then. Japan is the germany of asia.
 
Hm no.. I have to disagree. South Korea is definitely not "like poland". Poland is very much still a poor country incomparable to Germany. SK is an advanced economy, with a standard of living similar to the one of Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore. It's also Japan's main competitor at the highest level of technology (high-speed trains, electronics, cars, ships). Some japanese companies are particularly worried (sony for instance is stuggling with samsung).

With respect to China: SK is to China a bit what France is to Russia. Not as strong militarily but much more advanced politically/economically.

I agree only with this part --- South Korea is definitely not "like poland".
 
When I was in Korea last year, we (as in us US Army folks) kept getting mixed feelings from the Korean people. The government would say they loved us, as well as quite a few Korean folks, but then "across the street," there would be folks who hated the American presence altogether. Also, Korea has it's small towns and low-income areas, but it also has big cities and upper-class areas as well. The atmosphere that a few of us gathered was that of "leave us alone."
 
Korean newspaper simulated the virtual fight between their new "so-called Aegis" ship and Japan's F22 fighter-jets (we've never had yet)

and they would won.

By the way Japan is Korea's hypothetical enemy?
 
it is very sad korean newspaper writes such stupid things though I uderstand their rejoicing .
