Tourism Japan to raise departure tax on foreign tourists

Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba responded favourably to a suggestion to raise the departure tax imposed on foreign tourists when exiting Japan. During a session of the Upper House Budget Committee on 19 May, Yumi Yoshikawa, a member of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, pointed out that Japan's current departure tax is comparatively lower than many other nations. She recommended increasing the charge, commonly called the international tourist tax, for overseas visitors to finance initiatives to address overtourism and related challenges.

Japan charges a departure tax of 1,000 yen ($6.90) on all people, including Japanese, who exit the country. The tax is added to their airfares or ship fees, and the revenue is used to promote tourism in Japan. Ishiba appeared cautious about raising the departure tax rate on Japanese citizens, saying it is "arguable" whether such a move would be "well-balanced."
