JR group companies said they will raise prices for the Japan Rail Pass, a ticket aimed at foreign tourists that allows unlimited travel across the country, including most shinkansen services. The six passenger railway operators handle the pass. Prices will increase by about 5-6% from 1 October. It is the first revision in three years.
JR Group companies last revised Japan Rail Pass prices in October 2023, raising them by around 70%. The companies said the latest increase reflects fare hikes introduced by some member firms since then. Last month, East Japan Railway Co. raised fares by an average of 7.1%. It was the first full-scale increase since the former national railway was privatised in 1987. The minimum base fare for local trains went up from 150 yen to 160 yen.

Green Car: 70,000 yen → 74,000 yen (+4,000 yen) - 14-day pass (adult)

Ordinary carriage: 100,000 yen → 105,000 yen (+5,000 yen)
