The people keep coming back, and the community is awesome, so I guess I would rate it as popular.
 
We have a lot of members who have been here for years, and we have about 2000 members with 25 or more posts.

Threads: 36,297, Posts: 582,562.

I guess you can say that this forum is popular.... although it can be better than it already is.

Is jref popular? All I can say is Jref's the best Japan forum out there.

95% of the members are really cool and intelligent. When there's trouble with a troll everybody comes to your aid here. The threads are helpful and entertaining to say the least. I can't help but post on 'Why should you be banned?' and many more awesome threads.

Let's not forget our admins and mods. Many forums I've been to have people in charge who are mad with power just looking for someone to push around. There's not a admin or mod on Jref that doesn't have my respect. Big shout out to all-stars like Dutch Baka and everybody's uncle, Uncle Frank! Ya'll rock!

Great people, great threads, and just great all around!

Jref is more popular than a Friday night beer run!
 
i think Yes it's popular,when you write "Japan Forum" or "Japan" in Google you will see JREF on Top of the list,i saw many members from different countries here in Jref.
I searched for svereal months ago for Japanese forum in english but i always back to Jref.
i think JREF is very great Sire-Forum but poeple dont know it especially those who like Japan !

Truth be told though, a majority of those posters with over 20 posts never ever come out of the fail rock (aka jrock) section. I mean the serious discussion sub-forum's pretty dead. Every now and then some unfortunate soul wanders in, but thats about it.
 
how many people is online at certain point means nothing about popularity when it comes to worldwide comunity as JREF is. everybody is online at different time.
 
It is true that it doesn't have the lively activity it once had, but that's mostly because the most interesting topics regarding Japan (its positive, negative, humorous and eccentric aspects) have already been discussed/trampled into pulp in the past years. Most newbie questions can be covered with a search here.

Plus, the more knowledgeable members have tired of repeating answers again and again and no longer login as often as they did--though they may be checking the forum time and again as "guests."

Still, I think the forum still is an important presence on the Web for the information it offers on Japan from the foreign perspective.

Some of you may have noticed, but some of the threads (such as the foreigner opinion on 2Channel and on use of "futon") at JREF have been translated into Japanese and posted in private blogs and websites for Japanese who cannot understand what is written here.
 

I thank them for answering my questions, as I'd be beyond lost without their guidance. You, undrentide, Toritoribe, ASHIKAGA, Elizabeth, aardwolf, Glen, grapefruit, Kira pop into mind.
 
Yes, I believe it to be popular especially if one looks at the number of "guests" reading the forum at any given time. It is usually more than 100 people.

To me it is still, by far, the best forum on Japan that I have participated in, and I have participated in many. There is a wide age range represented from all over the world and it is not relegated to one age group, like teenagers or one main topic like anime, or J-Pop, or bashing Japan. A wide range of topics and opinions are represented in a fair forum.

After 4 1/2 years, it is still the one I participate in.
 
I think it's not popular, because most of the members from over the world , and Japan forum suppose to have a lot of Japanese and Chinese members and that's not available so much here .
But it's good to have big number of members from over the world .......

You have it wrong there. This is basically an English-language forum "on" Japan and not "of" the Japanese. It serves as a "gateway" for non-Japanese/non-Chinese people to gain an understanding--or at least a glimpse--of their respective cultures and languages.

There are a lot of Japanese fora and websites out there on the Web, but they are written in Japanese. I'm sure the same is true for the Chinese.
If you wish to speak to Japanese and Chinese people, you'll have to learn the languages.
 
This forum-site is the best info database about Japan on the web....
i have not seen any website or forum includs all this info.
i think it's a good guide for the non japanese to read about japan,but of course japanese are few here because of the language.
Step by step and this site will be Japan gate in English.
another thing,it doesnt matter how many members come online for this type of websites witch is information database.

Way too many of those topics revolving around j-rock.
Bet if I did a "Miyavi gender reassignment" google search, a topic here would pop up.
 
I decided to join JREF after being a member of JF.
I didn't find that forum useful at all, as opposed to JREF, there's a lot of useful information on here it seems. JF was a bunch of kids that've never been to japan, don't have any goals on going to japan, just people that're fans of 'Yaoi'.

All and all I think JREF is a better place.
 
I usually make a point of liking things that aren't popular, but forums need to be somewhat popular or the discussions go nowhere.

JREF is just nice. I'm a member of several other forums, a couple of which are huge; the topics get updated so fast it's hard to keep up. It's sometimes a bit slow here, but it always picks back up eventually. This forum is a bit like a marriage to me. I get bored sometimes and look around elsewhere for a bit of excitement. But I always come back here in the end, even if I have to put in some work to maintain my interest here ;-)
