Does anyone know if you have a Japanese driver license what you need to do to get an international license?

For us we just got to AAA and have one issued in several languages.

Depends on the country, and maybe state. In the Hawaii (all of US?) they can actually use a Japanese license, as new out-of-state residents can use their respective state's license. I think there is some type of time limit before they have to get a Hawaii license, in the case of long term residency.

Yeah I've done it a few times as I have a Japanese Lic as well. Just go to your local License Renewal Office and ask for the forms necessary for the "Kokusai Unten Menkyo-sho". They will hook you right up. It took me about 30 to 45 minutes from start to finish, no big deal really.


I just noticed something, you are in the US right? The information I wrote there is for someone living here in Japan. Sorry if I confused the issue there.

You don't really give a lot of detail here. Who has the Japanese license? And in which country do you plan to use it to get an international license?

Also, are you aware that international licenses are not valid in the country of issue?

Lol sorry Mike, it's for my girlfriend. She's going to need to be able to drive here so I wanted to get info for her about getting an international license. Thanks hachiro. My reference was for me since I live in the US I just go to AAA and apply for the international license and pay the processing fee.

She should telephone the license testing center (prefectural police) so she can make sure she takes everything she needs with her and can avoid making two trips. It's a very simple procedure.
