Nestled in a remote region of Kyushu, untouched by mainstream exploration, lies a natural wonder waiting to be discovered. Imagine a colossal boulder, 7 meters tall, resembling a wide-mouthed Pac-Man, the iconic video game character, ready to gobble up unsuspecting climbers on their trek towards Mount Hokodake. This is Pakkun Rock, a geological marvel that has become a social media sensation. The "mouth" of Pakkun Rock is a staggering 6.5 metres wide and 2.5 metres deep. It appears as if a giant cleaved the rock in two with a colossal knife. This unique formation lies along the path leading to the majestic 1,277-metre Mount Hokodake.

Mount Hokodake rests within a breathtaking landscape sculpted by millennia of volcanic activity. Valleys once formed by molten rock have undergone dramatic uplifts and erosion, resulting in the region's distinctive, rugged terrain. This mountainous area is further distinguished by a colossal granite slab on the south side of Mount Okue, the tallest peak in the Okue mountains at 1,644 metres, located in northern Miyazaki Prefecture. Reaching Pakkun Rock requires a one-hour hike from the Shishikawa campground. The trail winds through a valley along a steep mountain path and culminates in a magnificent 50-metre waterfall. However, Pakkun Rock remains hidden behind a large rock, guarding the upper stream of the waterfall like a secret treasure waiting to be unveiled.
