Hi,
I would like to know what are the steps that are involved in getting a Japanese driver license. Is it good to go to a driving school and start from there. If so, would I get a list of approved driving schools that are in Japan, So I could choose the right driving school to learn and how would I apply for driver license after learning driving. Wondering, if there is a Japanese transport or licensing department website where I can look into, if they have information listed down. Also, is there a list of driver license local office address available which I can look into to see.

Thanks in advance.

Do you already have a license in your home country? If so, when did you get the license and when are you coming to Japan?

If you don't have a license in your home country and you can get one more than three months before you come to Japan then I very strongly recommend you do so. It is much easier and cheaper to convert a foreign license than it is to get a Japanese license by going to driving school in Japan.

From past posts . it seems the trouble and expense are not worth it , public trans is hard to beat.

Not if you live in some remote areas, in rural prefectures.

Have to agree to that!

Even as a militant cyclist I have to admit that the car has become indispensable to us, especially when travelling off the beaten track. Commuting in the Tokyo metropolitan area is a major PITA though. :blackeye:

Thanks for your information people.

The link which was provided by Mike cash helps a lot. I have a driver license already with me, so i could convert it to Japanese one, if I had to come around Japan.

Thanks again.
