Some saddening news from the realm of Japanese cinema: Shohei Imamura ツ― the director of Narayamabushiko (The Ballad of Narayama), Unagi (The Eel) (which won the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 1997), and my favorite of his films, Akai hashi no shita no nurui mizu (Warm Water under a Red Bridge) ツ― died on Tuesday in Tokyo; he was 79 years old.
