I want to learn Chinese

The tones and whatnot in Chinese are not fun to try to wrap your tongue around if your first language is an atonal one. It can be a very 'poetic' language in the right hands though.

hi , i can write some chinese , but i can't read it

ni hao = 你ツ好 = hello

ni hao ma = 你ツ好吗 = how are you

wo hen hao , xie xie , ni na ?= 窶ーテ、ナ徒ツ好 谢谢 ツ, 你窶愿 ツ? = am fine , thanks , and you ?

wo ma ma hu hu = 窶ーテ、 吗吗ナ津毒津 = am so so

it's easy to write , but hard to read , also hard to speak , but it's like it too much

Hi everyone, I run a bilingual English and Chinese blog, good to keep in touch with my languages while in Japan!

Wow, that's pretty nice, kraystone!

Thanks Glenn! Too much Japanese classes and chit-chats with my Chinese classmates made me forget English at one point in time. So I decided to write a bilingual blog and draw bilingual comics!

By the way, how did you learn English? It seems to be native.

My English is near native, we actually use it as the main communication language in my country, which means all our classes from young are conducted in English. Our mother tongues are taught separately due to our multi-racial culture, so that's why we're mostly bilingual or more. Unfortunately, my Chinese is not as good as people from China and Taiwan due to lack of practice and our environment.

BTW, any idea if signatures will only appear on the first reply and subsequently disappear? Or did my signature had broken any rules? I find this forums very strict.

Where are you from?

No, you didn't do anything wrong. I think it was a space-saving measure, but it'll show up if you quote somebody as the second post on a page, but not if you "Quick Reply" or something like that. It's just the forum software or program.

Ah I see, thanks Glenn! I'm from sunny Singapore~ (not in or anywhere near China)

No problem.

Singapore, eh? And you write in Traditional Chinese? That seems strange to me, but maybe I just don't know enough about Singapore.

Yeah~you're right! We learn simplified Chinese but because when I was studying in SF, my close friends were all from Taiwan, so I started to write a comic blog in the Taiwanese blogging platform窶督ウ窶督シ. Hence my habit to use traditional Chinese.

I'd stopped updating that blog because I had moved to blogspot to target English audiences back in Singapore~

原來是這樣啊?明白了。

By the way, I prefer traditional, so it's cool with me.

哈哈真的嗎?對了,你為什麼要學華語啊?

Although, in the course of reading about Chinese historical figures and Chinese history in general, I had always thought it would be cool to be able to read it in the original (or at least in Chinese haha). Plus the total difference in the grammar from Japanese, at least in terms of inflection (lots in Japanese, none in Chinese) was something that intrigued me. I wanted to learn how it worked. Aside from that, I guess I just found it fascinating for some reason. Although it'll probably take a few years, I plan on doing some Korean after I feel fairly good about Mandarin, and I'd like to learn some Cantonese too (and Vietnamese and Thai would be interesting as well). Since all of those languages are in the Sinosphere, or at least have been influenced by it if even indirectly, I'm curious to know how they're similar and different. I guess I just like learning and comparing languages.

Ha, I'm glad I gave up trying to write all that in Chinese. I'm not at that level yet!

Aww man, I thought you were at "that" level!!!

So... when are you going to come and stay in Asia? XDDD

PS. Cannot reply your pm back due to forum limitations, oh uncle frank... ...

I wish I were at at that level!

I'd love to go to and stay Asia, but I have to get some things figured out first.

I think you have to throw a dice and see which country you land up to XD

I'll be in Japan till 2013 September~

PS. My PM says "You may only post 2 messages every 1440 minutes." Which means 24hrs later...

A roll of the dice, eh? Hmm... Well, I was playing the lottery. haha

I wonder if that time restriction is there because you're a new member. I know new members have other restrictions, like not being able to post URLs or pictures, but I hadn't heard about this one.

Ya when you win lottery don't forget us!

New members seem to have a lot of restrictions, and like what uncle frank would say, everything is set by the system to bla bla bla bla bla~~~
a measure to nurture long-term forum members and get rid of short-term spectators

Ha, well, I haven't played in a while.

Well, it's mostly to discourage the spammers, like the ones who just want to make tons of posts about cheap, illegal goods or post disgusting pictures of people being tortured as examples of why Japanese people are evil, for instance. That happens fairly frequently, actually.
