Hi all! I'm new here...I stumbled on to this forum when I was googling for additional info on the MEXT scholarship. Anyway, I was wondering, does anyone here have any knowledge about the Asian Youth Fellowship (AYF)? (Gaargh, I can't post a link for this...you guys will have to Google it...)

It's somewhat like a preparatory course for those who don't know the Japanese language and it's linked to the MEXT scholarship (upon successful completion, you get placed in a Japanese institution as a MEXT scholar). I'm actually trying to find people who have gone for this...

Another thing I was wondering, when applying for the MEXT scholarship for postgraduate/graduate studies, how do you fill up your research plans? Do you have to approach a professor in a uni of your choice first or do you just come up with an outline yourself?

Hi there. Actually i have the same problem with you. I am looking for those who have received this fellowship before or the person who knows about this fellowship very well. And, I would like to share some info here. As I hv emailed the embassy, the officer replied that AYF will assign a priority to english speakers, instead of those who have JLPT qualification. 1 quota for master and 1 quota for phd (highly competitive!!!, phewww~), subject to change. I intend to apply so but I just don't know how to start the research proposal without the guidance of prospective supervisor. I asked about that too, the officer just did not reply me at all, maybe he/she doesnt know it too. It is not advisable to contact prospective supervisor for AYF according to the officer from embassy.

Yay! Someone replied! Wow, you've contacted the embassy already...I was still wondering if I should (you know, 2nd thoughts and all). And omg, the quota is so little!!!

My guess is that you can't find a prospective supervisor yet because there's no guarantee and it's gonna take a long time before you actually get to the university? I don't know...but this sorta makes it tougher. I'm also at a lost at the proposal part.

Actually I did contacted the prospective supervisor in Japan. He looks like willing to take me but I need a scholarship first before coming to Japan. I am seriously thinking about to quit the AYF due to limited quota and competition. I was thinking it would be good after the announcement of Global 30, I could see the hope to pursue my master's study in Japan, however, the quota, the language, research proposal, especially the timing and waiting period make me feel annoying and getting frustrated.
