Fried-insect vending machine launched

A shop owner in Gifu Prefecture has installed a vending machine selling fried insects: dried house crickets, cookies laced with cricket powder, and salted fried locusts, silkworm chrysalises, bamboo caterpillars, diving beetles, red-legged grasshoppers, two-spotted crickets and their larger specimens. According to the report, about 20 such vending machines already exist across Japan.

The bottled bugs are sold for 1,000 yen (about $9) per jar, including tax. The insect menu changes depending on the time of year. A vending machine offering insect foods is seen in the city of Gifu on Oct. 1, 2021. It's the first machine of its kind in Gifu Prefecture. According to Nohira, around the time he was thinking of ways to get people to take an interest in environmental issues through insect-based foods, he got to know Tatsuaki Morooka, 55, head of insect food manufacturer Hamaru Foods, based in Sasebo, Nagasaki Prefecture. Nohira subsequently purchased insect foods from the company and began selling them through the vending machine.

The insect menu depends on the time of year. I guess that's good to know, wouldn't want to get bored with the same old bugs.
