Forgetting to Remember

I have recently come across a problem that frustrates me to no end. I will log on, usually not checking the little "remember" box. I will then proceed to go about, posting and whatnot. Every once in a while I'll decide to type up a long response. By the time I go to post the reply, it has already been long enough for me to need to re-log in. A screen will come up saying this, I re-enter my information, but after that, it takes me back to the post a response page. Which is then completely blank of any and all information I had just spent so long typing up. Is there any way to make it so when this happens, what you had previously typed does not disappear?

Would be nice.

Checking that "remember me" box does seem to work if you remember to check it.

I just checked the box the first time and have almost never logged out. Every time I come online and head to Jref i'm always logged in already - nice and easy!

The downside is that you have to go to 'invisible' mode otherwise you're username is always in the online members list, which looks a bit silly. A small price to pay though (and it seems quite a few regular members here do use that invisible mode, for whatever reason, it's not unusual).

Suggestion here, oh and btw I've had that happen many a time as well. If you remember, try copying the text before submitting it, and if you are automatically logged off, which is a pain particularly after a long reply, log back in and then paste your post in a new reply.

It isnt the greatest suggestion, because I never know when it is going to happen and on occasion I forget to do it , but it has helped me in saving some posts.

Thank you for the responses, but there are certain reasons that I have for being hesitant to use the remember function, the most prominent being that it is a public computer.

Obeika - I think I'll just have to start doing that, thanks for the suggestion.

That's the same thing for me as well. I dont mind when I am at home but when I am at work or some other location and logged on it does cause some headaches.

My questions for the powers that be here is...

What is the approximate time limit a person can stay logged on before getting automatically bumped off?

Plus is there anything that can be done to stop this from happening in the first place?

Hehe, if anyone ever doubted the popularity of this site, they may have to look twice at thousands of members who keep logged in simultaneously (better not give the admins any more ideas...)

Seriously, though, I think you're quite safe from silliness in either mode and am quite sure that being online is not the same as being remembered or vice versa.

But don't get me started on the privilege (or right, really) of certain well-placed functionaries being able to 'see' and 'monitor' conscientious, privacy-seeking JREF citizens that would rather remain more anonymous...

One more option that may--taking my great lack of 'geekness'--is to, of course, always use the advanced mode, and hit the 'review post' from time to time.

Now, in order to add evidence to the 'nothing if life is free' proposition, I'll have to admit that there is a cost. YES...you will NOT lose your text, and you WILL be kept on line, BUT...you will have to re-paragraph each time, since it all gets squished together.

The 'remember me' button may well be the best !

Having asked about this problem via PM, I now do click the Remember Me box because if I dont I find that when I'm writing a long post in reply it often disappears into Cyberspace lol.

if you have the "remember me" box checked it doesnt always keep your name up on the online members list, it just stays there for awhile after you leave.
