Eligible for spouse visa if Japanese spouse has only PT job?

Hello all,
I have searched and searched and decided I will just post my question here because I can't find an answer specific to our situation. So, I married my japanese husband while we both are living in America. We now want to move to japan and I plan to obtain a spouse visa after we arrive (using change status of residence). My husband will have only part time contract work that doesn't count him as an 'employee', and I am wondering if this will be enough to please the immigration office as far as the proof of employment is concerned. We will also have a decent savings, if that counts for something. Otherwise his father is deceased and mom is long since retired. I'm not sure what our options are there.

You are eligible to get the spouse visa whether he is employed or unemployed. Doesn't make a difference. Being married is the only requirement.

But according to the visa requirements on the Atlanta japan consulate page the spouse has to show Certificate of Employment (ZAISHOKU SHOMEISHO), copy of Tax Record, latest bank statement etc. to prove he can support.

He will have contract work and not be considered an 'employee' and no tax document to prove income because we are coming from being unemployed in the US. Is it your experience that immigration doesn't consider the income or work type ?

I got married in Japan, and at the time, I was between jobs. My J wife was working only part-time, and it was no problem at all to get the spouse visa. My father-in-law had just retired, but was able to sign as guarantor. I realize that is not the same as your case, so what exactly CAN you both show other than a bank account? Was there steady work in the States? That would be something. How about upcoming work in Japan? If so, would you husband's employer be willing to provide a statement of some sort?

Contract work is WORK. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Contract work is widespread here. At the very least, be civil, not desperate, in your inquiries to immigration and show them your diligence in trying to provide everything they need, even if it amounts to substitutes.
