Those (residing in Japan) who thought their electricity bill for January was astronomical, brace yourself: Tepco will increase its electricity rates by some 30% in June this year!

TEPCO hopes the rate hike will improve its business environment, which has been hit hard by soaring fuel costs. "We have come to this difficult decision as (surging costs) could disrupt the stable supply of electricity," Kobayakawa said. The submitted application factors in the plan to bring the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear plant in Niigata Prefecture back online. The utility applied to the industry ministry to raise the regulated electricity rates, which requires government approval. The ministry will examine the application and decide the final rates after public hearings to solicit opinions from the public. If the ministry approves TEPCO's request, a monthly bill for a standard household using 260 kilowatt-hours is expected to rise by 2,611 JPY ($20), raising the current bill of 9,126 JPY to 11,737 JPY.

Don't fret! That just means announcements in Q3 of RECORD PROFITS!!!!! After all, air conditioning for pensioners isn't nearly as important as making shareholders happy and C levels rich!

Oh, I am not worried in the least! The benevolent powers that rule have decided to subsidise energy prices, meaning the shareholders will jubilate, and we can still blast our ACs full steam. Who - but future generations - cares about that skyrocketing household deficit?

Japan's 10 major electric power companies and four gas companies will lower their rates for February (covering usage in January). This decrease stems from the government's comprehensive economic stimulus package, announced in October 2022, that will reduce monthly electricity and gas bills for average households by around ¥2,500. The government will provide a ¥7 subsidy per kilowatt-hour for electricity and a ¥30 subsidy per cubic meter for gas for usage from January to August 2023 (and half that amount for both from September). As a result of the subsidies, an average household in Tokyo will pay ¥7,306 for electricity from Tokyo Electric Power Company and ¥6,424 for gas from Tokyo Gas, which is a decrease of ¥1,820 and ¥611, respectively, compared to January. - Source
