Edo Castle (江戸城 Edo-jō) was built by Ōta Dōkan (太田道灌, 1432-1486) in 1457. In the Edo Period (1603-1868), it was the administrative headquarters of the Tokugawa Shogunate, the residence of the shōgun, and the largest castle in Japan at its time. Although it is classified as a flatland castle (平城 hirajiro), it splendidly made use of the elevation of the former cape it was constructed on; spiral moats surrounded it to reinforce its defence.

Used to be. It burned down over a century ago. Maybe two centuries ago. It burned down a few times. The only thing left is the moats, some walls, and some guard towers.

Geotechnologies, a Tokyo-based company, has released an application that allows users to donate to the reconstruction of Edo Castle Tower just by walking about the historic site. Named "Edo Castle Reconstruction WALKERS" (江戸城再建WALKERS), it counts each step taken. Then, based on the number of steps the user has walked, the company will donate to the "Edo Castle Tower Reconstruction Association." The free application is compatible with Android/iOS.


For every 1,000 steps taken, users earn a coin known as 銭貨 (senka). The app features a 13-stage animation of Edo Castle's reconstruction, which evolves based on the total number of coins all users collect. GeoTechnologies will donate 100,000 yen to the Edo Castle Reconstruction Association for each stage completed. The developers highlight that simply walking with the app activated allows anyone to contribute to the rebuilding of Edo Castle.
