Anybody know where i can buy an english version of Doom3 in Tokyo. ☝

Nope but you can you get it by other means, if you catch my drift.

I've got it and damn...radeon 9600xt won't run it properly even on low settings

Doom3 is already out 0.0? I've heard that it is a pretty scary game. I saw it on G4 TV, and it was just like enhanced version of Resident Evil 4 except it was in space and some scientists made a hell hole.....

A lot of places in Akihabara offer English versions of games.

So whats the word on it? Is it any good?

I used to love Doom, simply for the fact of going to hell through the moons of mars. Cool little story, and there's little cooler than going to hell to kill what lives in it.

And whatever happened to Hexen? That was a spiffy game.

REALLY scary. It's pretty fun so far. They use a lot of shadows, eerie sound effects, and the typical "out pops the monster from nowhere" stuff...plus some spawning behind you. The thing that seems to make it the most freaky for me is that they give you a flashlight...but you can't have a gun out at the same time. So you're walking around with a flashlight somewhat unarmed, or in the dark with a gun out. Frickin imps...I hate em.

Yeah that's what got me, I lost so much health because I couldn't aim at a pistol-toting zombie right near the start...

and it seems ok, I can't say if it's as good as Doom 1/2 yet though.

Hexen was great, wasn't there a sequel?

man I miss hexen! I miss doom even more! I've been reading and looking at photo's of it and it looks RAW! :haihai:

Yeah, there was a Hexen II. I never got into those games...it must have been my crappy computer.

While I'm obviously inclined to say it's far better, I guess it's important to remember where the gaming world was when Doom originally came out. I remember being blown away by it at a computer show, and making my dad buy me the shareware even though I knew our PC couldn't run it. This is back when doubling my RAM to a whopping 8 MB was all that was keeping me from blasting imps to my heart's delight.

I'm definitely more freaked out by Doom 3...

Yeah, Doom... first time i played a multiplayer game. We ran an IPX emulation over the printer-port back then, as network cards weren't common property.

Aside from Hexen there was also Heretic. I believe it ran also on the Doom-engine.

But Doom 3... wow. Stunning to look at. Gamewise it's just the first Doom all over again, but the graphics are so good. And yeah, it's one tense game. Predictable at times, as you know there's going to be a monster in the next room, but you don't exactly know when and where.

Oh, and good news: The Chainsaw is also back in the game!

what? runs smoothly here on 800*600 med settings
also 9600xt
... do you have dx 9.c perhaps..? i had performance loss with that installed.
9.b does the trick here with the 4.4 catalyst drivers

-also be sre to set AA & AF off! severe performance loss else

There are lots of tweaks you know ppl ^^'...go look look looooooook....it runs smooth here. ☝

Hmm...I don't have the ATI software installed, not sure if AA/AF is on..

I have 2600XP cpu, 512mb ram and a good hard drive. I'm guessing AA/AF must be on by default then. Because Unreal 2 is almost as good, graphically, and it runs at 60fps, 1024x768 full effects.

Man, I remember when I was pissed because my computer couldn't run Doom 1 because there was a minimum requirement of 4 MB RAM, but we only had 2. Now I am mad becuase I only have a 1 GHZ processor, and Doom 3 runs incredibly slow.

ya im actually playing doom3 on a geforce fx 5200 pci card im playing it on low settings with the spectacular special effects off and even when its on low settings its still amazing

to check if it's of do this:
rightclick on your desktop,
properties,
settings,
advanced,
then 3d thingie (open gl / direct 3d)
then set the sliders in the middle. be sure to see that advanced is not checked! (or the main slider will be greyed out)

in the game: go to system settings, click advanced (righttop) then set antialiasing off.
now everything should be off (normally it's off by default)

btw, doom3 is not the same in graphics as U2, if you play it on max detail you'll see the difference, and doom 3 has special lighting.

Man this takes me back when FPS games used to be so simple. The game is mostly 2-dimensional and the monsters usually charge right at you. It's not too challenging but still a great game just because of the graphics. I mean it scares me whenever I play with the lights off.

Hmm, mr friend bought this game and he said it was "so-so." I don't know if I'll be getting it, though I know I'm gonna get Half-life 2.

I've got Doom 3 and beaten the singleplayer. I think it's a really good game, because the game has a very strong atmosphere and great graphics that sucks the player into that world. The sound is very well done with the many layers of sounds that you hear when walking around in the environment. The maps and monsters are also very nice and highly detailed. The game design is a mix of science fiction hightech and demonic darkness. The machines in the maps are really cool animated and look like they're actually doing something usefull.
The gameplay isn't revolutionary in any sense but it stays true to the original Doom style, which I think is not a bad choice because if they changed it much then it wouldn't be very Doom. The quite classical gameplay didn't bother me at all really. I give Doom 3 a 9 out of 10.

Doom3 and a VAIO

Thankyou for all your responses. I finally went to Akihabara and purchased a copy. Having played doom on the playstation i am finding all this keyboard crap annoying, so does anybody know of a decent USB japanese joypad i can use. I am using a Sony Vaio Laptop. Personally i just wanted to install doom3 and shoot monsters, for stress, i hope you understand and anybody working here in Tokyo would understand.

The original Doom was perfectly playable with just the keyboard. Of course, that was because all the levels were 2-dimensional.

The best way to play Doom 3 (and all other current FPS games) is to use the keyboard for moving around and using the mouse to aim / look around.
With a laptop that would not be an option though, unless you plug in an external mouse.

Its nothing to special......same monsters over and over and it gets lame.....I run it smooth as can be but im to big of a Silent Hill fan to be scared by this wimpy game

I had no option like that in display. But I reinstalled the latest drivers and ATI Control Panel and it's fine now. Runs smoothly at 800x600 High Detail.

I completed it a while ago, it's definitely worth playing. I still prefer Doom 2 though

It's worth playing but it's far too easy though. I played in medium difficulty and didn't meet any problem or challenge I didn't overcome in 60 seconds. I used shotgun 90% of the time, because the enemies are so stupid it makes me laugh.. defeated the last demon in 1 try..

But it was a lot of fun shooting those baby like little *******, gave me the chills when I needed to reload and they were trying to scratch my *** off as I ran away

It's worth playing!
