I asked my significant other about this. Years ago, we attended her grandmother's Sanjūsannichi at Engakuji in Kitakamakura.
That's when I learned that Buddhist priests have a very worldly side as far as culinary extravaganza and automobiles are concerned.
Anyhow, according to the Buddhist calendar, certain inauspicious days have to be avoided:
- 友引 (tomobiki) – Funerals are avoided this day, but private gatherings of friends are permitted.
- 仏滅 (butsumetsu) – This day, literally meaning "death of the Buddha", is thought to be inauspicious all day.
