This might turn into a thread or not, but it is mainly a rant on critics. Over the past few years more Japanese/Asian horror films are being released into Europe. Many of them have been well recieved by the film press and the critics that write for them. Fine so far. My bugbear is this. With more Horror film coming out some critics in the film press are starting to say 'not another woman with long black hair..' etc, etc. My problem with this statement is that women in Japn and Asian usually have black or very dark hair. I believe it is called a racial characteristic. The current syle is also to wear it long ergo any film featuring a female ghost will have long black hair. These same critics do not seem to complain when the next teen slasher from America comes out. Yet the Bad guys are usually white, male, and use a mask or badly disfigured ie: Freddy, Jason, Scream, the Burning and so on in to infinity. Its like saying that all Arabian films feature Arabs or Bollywood films feature yet another Indian. Why can't they just say these films are better than the majority of tripe that Hollywood is turning out at the moment. Just seems to be petty to me.
I will now get off my soapbox (Imperial leather) have a large whiskey to calm down and feel free to comment.
